Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The collapse of Graham’s world was swift and merciless. Following the boardroom explosion, the company’s stock went into freefall. Investors, terrified by the impending federal investigation, scrambled to distance themselves. Graham returned to the Westchester mansion only to find Audrey in the foyer, calmly placing a single suitcase near the door.

"You can’t do this to me!" Graham roared, his face flushed with the erratic desperation of a man losing his grip on reality. "You’re my wife! We have a life here!"

"I am a business partner you betrayed, Graham," Audrey said, not even looking at him as she folded a cashmere scarf. "As for being your wife? You discarded that role the moment you allowed your mother to demean me in my own home and invited your secret child to sleep in my son’s nursery."

The mistress, realizing the money had dried up and the scandal was hitting the national news, vanished with the child, leaving Graham to face the wreckage alone. Lorraine, the woman who had once wielded power like a scepter, now sat on the floor, watching her late husband’s legacy disintegrate.

Audrey didn’t have them evicted immediately; she let them stew in the cold reality of their own making. She cut their credit, froze the joint accounts, and finalized the legal walls that would protect her assets. She packed Micah into the car, taking him to her parents' home in Seattle, a place where he would finally know safety. When Graham tried to block the driveway, she didn't plead; she simply held up her phone and said, "The police are already on their way to discuss your embezzlement, Graham. Do you want to try and stop me?"

The climax of their downfall arrived when federal agents pulled into the driveway to serve the warrants. Audrey watched from her rearview mirror as they led Graham away in handcuffs. The rain began to fall, washing away the dust of the life she had once thought was perfect. The mansion, which had once been a symbol of her status, now looked like a tomb for a life she had outgrown. She shifted the car into gear, leaving the ruins of her old life behind, and drove toward a future that belonged only to her.
