Chapter 3 - The False Signing

The realtor arrived at 4:00 PM, a slick-looking man who clearly knew Claire well. They exchanged a look—a shared secret—that confirmed my suspicions. They were all in on it.
"Mr. Cole," the realtor said, extending a hand. "I’m sorry for the circumstances, but this property is a prime asset. It’ll settle everything."
"Of course," I said, gesturing toward the dining room table where the documents were laid out.
Claire had prepared everything. There were medical power of attorney forms, property sale agreements, and a request for an immediate liquidation of all accounts. It was a masterpiece of legal theft.
I sat down, my fountain pen in hand. My mother sat in the corner, her breathing ragged. She was terrified.
"Hurry up, Daniel," Claire urged, her hand hovering near my shoulder. "We have a dinner reservation to celebrate."
I looked at the signature page. "This property transfer… it says it was signed by my mother three months ago? That’s impossible. She hasn't been able to write her name in years."
Claire didn't hesitate. "The tremors come and go. She was lucid that day. Mason witnessed it."
"Right. Mason."
I began to sign. I signed slowly, feeling the ink flow onto the paper, knowing that every stroke was sealing their fate. As I finished the last page, Mason arrived. He walked in like he owned the place, a smug grin plastered on his face.
"Everything in order?" he asked, ignoring me and heading straight for the drink cabinet.
"Yes," I said, handing the stack to the realtor. "Everything is done."
Claire let out a breath she had been holding for months. She grabbed the folder, her eyes dancing with victory. "You made the right choice, honey. You’ll see."

I stood up and walked over to my mother, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I think you’re right, Claire. I’ve made exactly the right choice."
At that moment, a heavy knock echoed through the house. It wasn't the realtor's client. It was the sound of a raid.
