Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The front door didn't just open; it was breached. Three uniformed officers swarmed the dining room before the realtor could even pick up his briefcase. Detective Reyes stepped in last, looking calm, almost bored.
Claire’s face went white. She clutched the folder to her chest. "What is this? This is a private residence!"
"Actually, ma'am," Reyes said, holding up a warrant, "this is a crime scene."
Mason dropped his glass, the bourbon splashing across the hardwood. "Wait—what? This is ridiculous! We have legal documents!"
I stepped forward, pulling the three remaining USB drives from my pocket and setting them on the table. "You have forged documents. Those are based on a fantasy you created while you abused an elderly woman for five years."

"You wanted my life," I corrected, my voice ice. "And you nearly destroyed the only person who ever truly loved me to get it."
Reyes motioned for the officers to move in. Claire started to scream—a shrill, ear-piercing sound that echoed off the high ceilings. Mason tried to bolt for the back door, but he was tackled by two officers and slammed into the wall.
I didn't watch the arrest. I focused on my mother. She was watching the scene, her eyes finally clear. She reached out and took my hand.
"They're gone, Mom," I whispered. "You’re safe now."

She looked at me, a tear tracking through the wrinkles on her cheek. "I knew you’d come back, Daniel. I knew."
The house was chaotic, filled with flashing lights and the sound of shouting, but for the first time in five years, the air felt clean. The suffocating weight that had plagued this home was being dragged out in handcuffs.
