Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

The following week, the case felt like it was shifting. Every motion we filed was met with a counter-motion that seemed to have inside information. It was as if Clara’s legal team knew exactly what evidence we were preparing to present.

I grew paranoid. I started auditing our digital footprints. One evening, while working late at my office, I noticed a remote access log on my secure server. Someone had been siphoning information from my private files.

I traced the IP address. It wasn't coming from Clara’s house. It was coming from the office of my own project manager, David—the man who had been my right hand for five years.

I confronted him in the breakroom. "Why, David? I trusted you."

David didn't even look up from his coffee. His face was devoid of the warmth I had come to rely on. "Clara is a very persuasive woman, Arthur. She showed me things you didn't. She told me that you were liquidating your assets to leave her with nothing, and she offered to protect my position if I helped her secure her future. In this industry, you learn that loyalty is just a line item."

The betrayal cut deeper than the domestic nightmare. I wasn't just fighting a wife; I was fighting an architect of ruin. I had to let him go, but I knew he was still feeding her information. I was essentially playing a game of chess against a grandmaster who had already seen my board.

I realized then that I couldn't trust the formal channels anymore. The system was too slow, and my inner circle was compromised. I needed to move fast, and I needed to be invisible.
