Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The verdict did not bring joy; it brought a heavy, solemn silence. Clara was found guilty of child abuse and attempted kidnapping. The sentencing would be lengthy, with mandatory psychiatric evaluation and intervention.

Watching them lead her away—this woman I had shared a bed with for years—was a hollow experience. There was no victory, only the finality of a chapter being violently closed.

The aftermath, however, was where the true work began. Lily was a shell of herself. The nightmares were constant, and the separation anxiety was so severe that she couldn't be in a room with a closed door. I took a leave of absence from my company, effectively stepping down from my board positions. The corporate world that once defined me felt small and trivial compared to the task of saving my daughter’s soul.

I stopped being a businessman and became a full-time father. We spent our days walking on the beach, collecting sea glass, and relearning the language of trust. It was agonizingly slow, but every small victory—a laugh at breakfast, a night without a nightmare—felt like a monumental achievement.
