Chapter 5 - Whispers Behind the Canvas

By 4:00 a.m., the state troopers had hauled Detective Miller away in handcuffs.
The storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, cold night sky filled with stars.
Julian sat at his large desk, reviewing the electronic decryption drive Miller had tried to use on his safe. Beside him stood Vance, his trusted long-time head of personal security—not to be confused with Arthur Vance—who had arrived with four heavily armed tactical guards to lock down the estate grounds permanently.
Elise sat on the leather sofa, holding a warm mug of coffee Julian had personally brewed for her.
“Miller sang like a canary the second the troopers mentioned federal conspiracy charges,” Vance reported, setting a tablet on Julian’s desk. “Arthur Vance paid him two hundred thousand dollars to steal your late wife’s original medical files and the primary trust ledgers. Arthur planned to alter the medical reports to claim Elena suffered from a hereditary psychological disorder, which he would then claim you were hiding from the court to prove you unfit.”
Julian’s eyes turned cold as zero-degree ice. “He tried to defile my dead wife’s memory to steal her children.”
“There’s more, boss,” Vance said quietly, glancing at Elise. “Miller said Arthur was terrified of something else inside that safe. Something Elena hid before she died.”
Julian frowned. He stood up, walked to the heavy iron safe behind his desk, and entered his private eight-digit master code.
The heavy steel door swung open with a dull, mechanical hiss.
Julian reached into the deepest compartment, pulling out a velvet-lined wooden box that belonged to Elena. Inside were her private jewelry pieces, her birth certificate, and a sealed manila envelope stamped with her hand-drawn wax seal.
Julian had never opened the envelope. Out of respect for her memory, he had left her private papers untouched since her passing.
He broke the wax seal now, pulling out a thick handwritten journal and a USB flash drive.
Elise stood up and walked over to his side. “What is it, Julian?”
Julian opened the journal to the last entry, written in Elena’s delicate, sweeping cursive three weeks before her sudden cardiac arrest.
He read the words aloud, his voice growing tighter with every sentence:
“If anyone is reading this, it means my brother Arthur’s threats were not empty. For six months, Arthur has been embezzling millions from Vance Logistics through off-shore accounts in Grand Cayman. When I confronted him with the audit reports last Tuesday, he told me that if I revealed the truth to Julian, he would make sure my daughters never saw their mother again. I am terrified. I have hidden the master audit files on the enclosed drive. Julian, my love, if something happens to me, protect our baby girls from my brother...”
A suffocating silence descended upon the study.
Elise covered her mouth with her hand, tears pricking her eyes. “She didn't die of a natural cardiac arrest...”
Julian dropped the journal onto the desk. His hands were shaking, not with fear, but with a terrifying, absolute rage that made the air in the room feel thick enough to choke on.
“Elena was fighting an autoimmune condition,” Julian whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. “Arthur knew her heart was weak. He forced her into an unbearable state of panic and stress, holding her children over her head, until her body collapsed beneath the pressure.”
He turned to Vance.
“Where is Arthur right now?” Julian asked.
“He’s hosting the annual Vance Logistics Executive Gala at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan tonight at eight o’clock,” Vance replied. “He’s planning to announce his bid for full chairmanship of the company.”
Julian looked at the USB flash drive sitting on his desk. Then he looked at Elise, whose eyes were shining with fierce, unwavering support.
“Call my tailor,” Julian ordered Vance quietly. “And get the private helicopter prepped on the pad.”

Julian turned to Elise, taking her hand into his. “Will you come with me to Manhattan, Elise?”
Elise squeezed his hand tightly. “I won't leave your side, Julian. Let's go finish what Elena started.”
