Chapter 7 - The Poison in the Well

The victory at the Plaza Hotel swept through New York high society like a wildfire, but the true battle was far from over.

With Arthur Vance locked away in a federal holding facility, the legal hold on Elena’s vast estate dissolved completely. Full custody of the twins and sole execution of the trust were officially finalized in Julian’s name by Friday afternoon.

Yet, a dark shadow still hung over the Caruso mansion.

On a quiet Tuesday morning, four days after the gala, Elise was preparing the twins' morning bottles in the high-tech kitchen on the estate’s ground floor.

The morning sun was shining brightly through the bay windows, casting warm light across the quartz countertops. Maisie and Rosie were sitting in their highchairs, giggling as they banged rubber spoons against their plastic trays.

Elise opened a brand-new, sealed tub of organic baby formula that had been delivered that morning by the estate’s regular supplier.

As she scooped the powder into the warm glass bottle, her nose caught a tiny, almost imperceptible scent.

It was sweet—unnaturally sweet, like crushed almonds mixed with bitter chemical residue.

Elise froze.

Her father had been a chemical safety officer for the Boston Port Authority before he passed away. She had grown up listening to him explain the distinct olfactory signatures of volatile organic compounds and industrial toxins.

Pure organic baby formula did not smell like bitter almonds.

Cyanide derivative.

Elise set the spoon down instantly, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. She grabbed the tub, pulling it away from the babies.

“Harrison!” she called out sharply toward the pantry.

The old butler stepped out, holding a silver polishing cloth. “Yes, Miss Elise?”

“Who delivered this formula tub this morning?” she asked, her voice tight with suppressed horror.

Harrison frowned. “The regular courier from the medical supply company, Miss. He signed in at the gate at seven a.m.”

“Did he hand it directly to you?”

“No... he left the crate in the side delivery room near the service entrance while I was taking Mr. Caruso’s coffee upstairs.”

Elise’s blood ran cold.

Arthur Vance was in prison, but his mercenary network—the corrupted guards and shady fixers he had hired—were still operating in the shadows! They knew that if the twins died before Arthur’s trial, the Vance trust would automatically default to Arthur’s legal defense fund under an old secondary clause!

They were trying to finish what Arthur started.

Before Elise could speak, the kitchen door swung open, and Julian walked in, wearing his dark gray suit, preparing to leave for his office.

“Good morning,” Julian said softly, his face instantly softening as he walked over to kiss the top of Maisie and Rosie’s heads. He turned to Elise, a warm smile on his lips. “You look serious this morning, my sweet—”

“Julian, don't touch the bottles!” Elise gasped, stepping between him and the counter.

Julian’s smile vanished instantly. “What happened?”

“The formula has been tampered with,” Elise said, her voice shaking with rage. “Someone poisoned the delivery crate this morning.”

Julian’s face transformed into an expression of such terrifying, lethal fury that even Harrison stepped back in terror.

Julian reached out, taking the tub of formula, smelling the faint chemical odor himself. His gray eyes burned with a dark, predatory light that signaled the absolute end of mercy.

He pulled out his satellite phone, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl.

“Vance,” Julian growled into the phone. “Lock down every gate on this property. The courier who dropped off the delivery crate at seven a.m.... bring him to the wine cellar intact. Now.”
