Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Bloodline

CRASH!
The glass of the small kitchen window exploded inward, raining sharp shards across the faded linoleum floor.
A heavy iron grappling hook caught the edge of the sill, followed immediately by the dark, gloved hand of a mercenary pulling himself up from the exterior fire escape.
Maya screamed.
In a fraction of a second, four years of pain and confusion vanished, replaced by the lethal, instinctual violence of the man Sebastian Vale truly was.
Before the mercenary could swing his boots through the broken frame, Sebastian surged forward. He grabbed the heavy wooden kitchen chair, smashed it across the man’s face, and hauled him bodily into the apartment. With a brutal, fluid motion, Sebastian stripped a suppressed pistol from the mercenary’s holster, flipped the weapon in his hand, and fired two shots into the man’s chest.
The mercenary fell dead onto the kitchen floor.
“MAYA! GET THE KIDS!” Sebastian roared over the deafening ring of the suppressed gunshots.
Maya didn't freeze. Motherhood had made her fast. She sprinted into the bedroom, grabbing Noah and Ivy under her arms, while Owen clutched her neck in terror. The toddlers began to scream as the sounds of shouting and heavy boots echoed from the hallway outside the front door.
BOOM!
The thin deadbolt of the apartment door splintered into pieces as a heavy boot kicked it open. Two men wearing tactical vests with Volkov syndicate insignias burst into the room, their automatic weapons raised.
Sebastian didn't hesitate. He dropped low behind the laminate table, firing three precise shots through the thin wood. The first gunman crumpled to the floor, shot through the neck. The second managed to fire a spray of bullets that chewed up the ceiling before Sebastian rolled out from behind the table and put a bullet through his forehead.
The kitchen was filled with the acrid smell of gunpowder, smoke, and blood.
Sebastian scrambled to his feet, ejecting the empty magazine from the mercenary’s pistol and slamming a fresh one into place from the dead man’s belt. He turned toward the bedroom, his eyes wide and wild.
“Maya! Out the back hallway! Move!”
Maya emerged from the bedroom, her face pale as ash, clutching all three children against her body. The toddlers were terrified, hiding their faces in her coat, sobbing hysterically.
Sebastian grabbed her by the waist, shielding her body with his own as he guided them through the broken front door into the hallway.
The building was in chaos. Alarms were blaring, and the sounds of heavy combat rang out from the lower floors as Sebastian’s elite security team engaged the remaining Volkov hitmen on the stairwells.
“Boss!” Dante appeared at the end of the corridor, his tactical suit covered in drywall dust, his rifle raised. “The alley is clear! We’ve got the armored Suburbans waiting!”
“Get them down!” Sebastian commanded, shoving Maya toward Dante. “Cover her!”
Dante led Maya down the narrow service stairs, his body positioned between her and the open railing, while Sebastian swept the rear, his gun raised, his eyes checking every door and shadow.
They burst out of the heavy metal service door into the cold night air of the alleyway.
Three black, heavily armored SUVs were idling in the narrow alley, surrounded by six heavily armed Vale guards returning fire toward the main street.
Dante yanked open the heavy door of the middle vehicle. “In! Get in!”
Maya scrambled into the back seat, pulling the three weeping children into her lap, wrapping her arms around them like an iron shell. Sebastian dove in right behind her, slamming the reinforced steel door shut just as a hail of bullets impacted against the bulletproof glass, leaving heavy white spiderweb cracks but failing to penetrate.
“GO! GET US TO THE ESTATE!” Sebastian shouted to the driver.
The heavy SUV roared to life, its tires screeching as it smashed through a wooden barrier at the end of the alley, bursting out onto Delancey Street and disappearing into the night traffic of Manhattan.
Inside the vehicle, the silence was deafening, broken only by the ragged breathing of the adults and the quiet, hiccuping sobs of the three children.
Maya sat pressed against the leather seats, her arms still locked tightly around Noah, Ivy, and Owen. She was shaking so violently that her teeth were chattering. Blood—not hers, but from the men Sebastian had killed—was smeared across the sleeve of her coat.
Sebastian dropped his weapon onto the floorboards, knelt in the narrow space between the seats, and reached out.
“Are you hurt?” his voice was raw, desperate, stripped of all authority. “Maya, look at me. Are any of you hurt?”
Maya slowly shook her head. She looked down at her toddlers. Noah was staring at the window, his little hands trembling. Ivy was burring her face into her mother’s sweater. Owen was clutching his toy dog so hard his knuckles were white.
“What was that?” Maya whispered, looking up at Sebastian with eyes filled with tears and horror. “Who were those men? You said... you said I was safe four years ago!”
Sebastian buried his face in his hands, pulling at his dark hair as a ragged groan escaped his throat.
“My uncle Dominic,” Sebastian said, his voice laced with venomous disgust. “When I ordered Dante to arrest him at the club, Dominic had a backup plan. He knew if I found out about the children, he would be stripped of his fortune and executed for treason against the family. So he went to Alexei Volkov.”
He looked up at her, his eyes hollow with guilt.
“Dominic gave Volkov your address,” Sebastian continued. “He offered Volkov a deal—kill you and the kids, destroy my sanity, and let Dominic take control of the Vale empire in exchange for giving the Volkovs full control of the Brooklyn docks.”
Maya felt a cold, icy dread settle over her soul. Her innocent children—four-year-old babies who didn't even know how to ride a bicycle—had just been marked for death by their own great-uncle for money and power.
“How could someone be so evil?” she whispered, tears spilling over her pale cheeks.
“The Vale bloodline has been poisoned for generations, Maya,” Sebastian said softly, reaching out to gently touch Noah’s head. The small boy didn't pull away this time; he leaned slightly into his father’s warm palm. “My grandfather... my uncle... they believed power was the only thing that mattered. They viewed people as chess pieces.”
He looked directly into Maya’s eyes, his expression turning resolutely fierce.
“I let that poison rule my life four years ago,” Sebastian said. “I thought I could play their game and keep my hands clean. I was wrong. But I promise you, Maya... it ends tonight.”
“Where are we going?” she asked softly.
“To the Berkshire Estate,” Sebastian replied. “It’s a fortress forty miles north of the city. High walls, private security grid, zero access. No one gets within five miles without my personal clearance. You and the children will be safe there.”
“And what about you?” Maya asked, noticing the cold, lethal resolve returning to his jaw.
May you like
Sebastian reached into his coat and pulled out a clean handkerchief, gently wiping the dust and smudge from Maya’s cheek.
“I am going back to the city,” Sebastian said softly. “To tear my uncle’s world down to the bedrock.”
