Chapter 4 - Child Protective Services and Police Arrival

Within twenty minutes, the small treatment room felt like the center of a federal investigation.
A silver-haired CPS caseworker named Marcus Gable arrived with a leather briefcase tucked under his arm, his expression grave and professional. He immediately introduced himself to Dr. Sterling and me, bypassing Dustin and Judith entirely as they stood fuming in the hallway under police supervision.
Mr. Gable reviewed the sealed prescription bottle, examined the initial pediatric blood panels coming off the lab printer, and knelt beside the exam table to speak softly with Chloe.
"Your teacher must be very proud of how smart and observant you are, Chloe," Mr. Gable said, his voice warm and steady. "You remembered exactly what you saw, and you protected your little brother when nobody else was listening."
Chloe offered a small, shy nod, leaning closer to me.
Mr. Gable stood up and turned to Officer Vance and Dr. Sterling. "Based on the preliminary evidence, the child’s acute febrile state compounded by undocumented chemical sedation, and the corroborating statements of the minor sibling, I am issuing an immediate emergency protective custody order placing both children under state wardship pending a formal dependency hearing."
"Wait a minute!" Dustin’s voice erupted from the doorway as he forced his way past the threshold, despite the warning hand of the security guard. "You cannot take my children! This is my house, my family! My wife is unstable—she’s the one who needs a psych evaluation!"
Officer Vance moved with practiced speed, grabbing Dustin by the forearm and spinning him around against the hallway wall with a metallic click of handcuffs.
"Mr. Carter, you are under arrest for felony child endangerment, conspiracy to commit assault, and reckless endangerment of a minor," Officer Vance recited formally, his voice cutting through Dustin’s frantic protests. "You have the right to remain silent..."
Judith shrieked, lunging forward toward the officer. "You can't arrest him! You can't arrest my son! We did nothing wrong! This is a conspiracy!"
A second officer stepped in, blocking Judith’s path and guiding her firmly toward the waiting area. "Ma'am, keep moving, or you'll be joining your son in the back of the cruiser for obstruction and accessory."
I sat on the edge of the exam bed, holding Leo’s tiny hand as the IV pump hummed quietly beside us. The chaotic shouting faded into a dull background hum as I watched the man I had married—the man who had watched his mother poison our infant son night after night—get hauled out of the emergency department in steel cuffs.
Dr. Sterling walked over, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"The worst part is over, Elizabeth," Dr. Sterling said softly. "Leo is stable, the toxins are being flushed from his system, and the state has your back. You survived the gaslighting."

I looked down at Chloe, who was hugging her teddy bear with a look of profound, unbreakable relief on her face.
"We survived," I whispered.
