Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months after the rainy night that nearly cost me my son, the coastal Oregon weather had given way to a brilliant, sun-drenched summer.
Our new home wasn't a sprawling suburban house weighed down by suffocating expectations and hidden locks. It was a cozy, sunlit cottage perched on a quiet hill overlooking the sparkling waters of the bay, surrounded by tall pine trees and a large, fenced backyard filled with bright yellow sunflowers.
On a Saturday morning, the kitchen smelled of fresh pancakes and warm vanilla.
Leo was sitting in his high chair, babbling happily, feeding fistfuls of banana slices to himself with a bright, healthy grin on his face. The dark shadows under his eyes were long gone, replaced by chubby cheeks, boundless energy, and clear, sparkling eyes that missed nothing.
Chloe sat at the kitchen island, carefully sketching a picture in her notebook—a detailed drawing of a shining sun, a cozy green cottage, a smiling baby, and a brave teddy bear wearing tiny denim overalls.
My phone rested on the counter next to a steaming mug of coffee. The notifications were quiet, peaceful, and entirely free of toxic interference.
Footsteps padded softly down the hallway, and two small arms wrapped around my waist from behind.
"Mommy, are we staying here forever?" Chloe asked, looking up at me with those bright, fearless eyes.

I knelt down, wrapping my arms around both of my children, pulling them close against my chest where a steady, unbroken heartbeat promised safety, truth, and unconditional love.
"Forever and always, sweetie," I whispered, kissing the top of her head as the morning sunlight poured through the open windows, illuminating a new dawn where nobody would ever question my voice again.
