Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Truth

Projected onto the giant screen in crisp, undeniable high-definition was not a threatening message from me.
It was a digital copy of a confidential medical clinic intake form dated exactly ten years prior—the exact week of my parents' twentieth anniversary.
At the top of the form, clearly legible for every single elite guest in the room to read, was the patient name: Allison Hayes.
Below it, the attending physician's clinical notes read: Patient presents with severe anxiety regarding underage pregnancy test results. Patient admits under psychological evaluation that she fabricated a false allegation of assault against her adoptive brother to protect her actual romantic partner, a local college student named [Redacted], from legal consequences and parental wrath.
The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos.
"What... what is that?" Richard stammered, staring up at the screen in horrified disbelief.
"That, Richard," I said, my voice echoing through the sound system, "is the truth you were too lazy, too arrogant, and too cowardly to look for ten years ago."
Sarah didn't stop there. With another tap, a second document appeared on the screen: a string of encrypted text message logs recovered from Allison’s old cloud backup—messages she had deleted the night before the police arrived at our house in 2016.
To: [Chad Miller] From: Allison Text: “OMG Chad, my parents are freaking out about the pregnancy test. I told them Zach did it. They completely bought it lmao. They kicked him out! We are totally safe.”
The silence in the room became absolute. You could hear the hum of the projector and the frantic, shallow breathing of Allison Hayes.
Allison stared at the screen, her face turning completely bloodless. The angelic, fragile victim act instantly evaporated, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. Her carefully constructed facade of innocence shattered into a million jagged pieces right in front of the entire Chicago social elite.
"No..." Allison whispered, backing away from the screen, clutching her head. "No, those are fake! He hacked them! He’s lying!"
"Every document on that screen," Marcus announced loudly, holding up a certified federal forensic authentication certificate, "has been verified by independent digital forensics experts, backed by court-subpoenaed hospital records, and certified under penalty of federal perjury. The girl you all praised as a saint is a chronic, manipulative liar who ruined an innocent boy's life to save her own skin."
Carol Hayes turned slowly toward her adopted daughter, her eyes wide with shock and profound betrayal. "Allison... is this true? Did you... did you lie?"
"Mom, don't listen to him!" Allison shrieked, tears of genuine panic streaming down her face now. "He’s a monster! He ruined our family!"
"No, Allison," I said, stepping closer to her until I towered over her shaking frame. "I didn't ruin your family. I just stopped letting you hide behind mine."

Richard slumped heavily into his chair, staring blankly at the floor as the weight of a decade's worth of blind cruelty crashed down upon him. The corporation was gone. The social standing was incinerated. And the golden daughter they had sacrificed me for had just been exposed as a fraud to every single person whose respect they had spent a lifetime currying.
Mason stood frozen, looking at me with a mixture of shame, guilt, and utter humiliation. He couldn't meet my eyes.
