Chapter 8 - The Net Tightens

The interior of the house, which had been my prison for years, suddenly transformed into a chaotic staging ground for justice. The heavy boots of the investigators echoed through the marble foyer, a stark contrast to the stifling, fearful silence I had been forced to maintain for so long.

I watched from the safety of the library as detectives meticulously bagged evidence. They didn't just take the servers; they took the journals Marlene had kept, the forged contracts, and the personal devices that contained every cruel text message Derek had ever sent to break my spirit.

Marlene was being escorted out in handcuffs, her silk robe dragging in the mud of the front lawn. She wasn't laughing anymore. Her face was a mask of jagged, panicked rage, her eyes darting frantically to find some way to talk her way out of the inevitable. She tried to catch my eye, to offer a pathetic plea for family loyalty, but I simply turned my back. She was no longer a person to me; she was a variable in an equation that was finally being balanced.

Derek, however, was silent. His arrogance had hardened into a cold, hollow shell. As the officers guided him toward the squad car, he stopped and looked at me one last time. There was no apology, no remorse—only a lingering, possessive hatred that proved he had never truly cared for me at all. It was the final confirmation I needed: he was a predator, and I had simply been his prey who learned how to bite back.

Elena Ruiz, my attorney, walked up to me, handing me a heavy wool coat. "It’s over, Elena. The evidence you provided is ironclad. We have enough to keep them locked away for a very, very long time."

I looked at the house—my father’s house. "It’s not just about them going to jail," I whispered. "It’s about what they did to the company. Can we save it?"

"We have everything we need," she assured me. "The firm is already being placed under a court-appointed receiver. And with your testimony as the lead forensic accountant, we can prove the embezzlement in a way that protects the employees and the legacy."
