Chapter 4 - Frozen Assets, Boiling Blood

My mother’s voice was barely a whisper, dry and raspy from the cold air she had inhaled during her hours outside. "Maya...?"
I rushed to her bedside, dropping to my knees and wrapping her frail, bandaged hands in mine. "I'm here, Mom. I'm right here. You're safe."
Tears trickled down her bruised cheeks, running into the gray strands of her hair. "They took... they took everything, Maya. The house... your father's watches... even the photo albums. Ray told me... he said if I didn't sign, he’d lock me away in an asylum and make sure I never saw you again."
"He lied, Mom," I said, my throat tight with emotion. "He can't touch you anymore. Neither can Daniel."
She looked at me with deep sorrow, her eyes filled with the heartbreak only a mother betrayed by her child could feel. "Daniel... I raised him, Maya. I gave him everything. How could he watch Ray push me into the snow? How could he stand there and lock the gate?"
"Because he’s a coward, Mom. And cowards always follow predators." I kissed her forehead gently. "Rest now. I have work to do."
Ten miles away, in the plush top-floor office of Vance Commercial Realty, chaos was breaking out.
Ray Vance slammed his heavy gold signet ring onto his mahogany desk, glaring at his computer monitor. Red error messages flashed across the screen: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED. CONTACT COMPLIANCE DIVISION.
"What do you mean, frozen?!" Ray roared into his desk phone at his senior banker. "I have payroll due today! I have a two-million-dollar closing on the downtown plaza at 11:00 AM!"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance," the banker’s voice trembled. "The directive came directly from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). All accounts associated with your Tax ID, as well as those of Vance Holdings, have been flagged for suspected elder financial exploitation and wire fraud. We cannot release a single dollar."
Ray slammed the receiver down so hard the plastic cracked.
Standing across the room, sweating through his designer shirt, was Daniel. He was holding his phone with trembling hands. "Ray... my card was declined at the garage. My lease payment bounced. What is going on? Maya can't do this, right? She’s just a compliance worker!"
"Shut up!" Ray yelled, pacing behind his desk like a caged animal. "She lied to us! She’s not some low-level paper pusher. She owns Northstar!"
Daniel’s face went pale. "Northstar? The firm that audited the Mayor’s campaign last year? The ones that sent the county commissioner to federal prison?"
"She thinks she can intimidate me," Ray spat, his eyes wide with frantic rage. "She thinks because she put a freeze on the accounts, she’s won. But the deed to the house is already registered at the county clerk’s office. I own the land. She can't touch the physical property without a three-month civil trial, and by then, I'll have sold the lot to the high-rise developers!"
Ray grabbed his heavy overcoat from the rack. "Get in the car, Daniel."
"Where are we going?"
May you like
"To the county courthouse," Ray snapped, his jaw set in a cruel line. "We’re going to file an emergency motion to declare your mother mentally incompetent, sell the house today for cash, and pay off the inspectors. If Maya wants a war, I’ll give her one."
As Ray and Daniel rushed out into the underground parking garage, they didn't notice the sleek black SUV parked three spaces away. Inside sat two of Northstar’s corporate investigators, quietly recording every word with directional microphones.
