Chapter 7 - The Witness in the Shadows

By 2:00 p.m., the storm had passed, leaving behind a cold, clear blue sky over the county.
I was sitting in a private briefing room at the State Police Headquarters. Across the table sat Captain Miller of the State Police Internal Affairs division—a clean, no-nonsense officer who had been brought in to replace the compromised local police chief.
"Ms. Lin," Captain Miller said, sliding a USB drive across the table. "We executed the search warrant on St. Catherine’s Hospital an hour ago. Dr. Sterling is currently in custody, but he's refusing to speak without a lawyer. However... someone else came forward."
"Who?" I asked.
"Nurse Sarah Jenkins," Miller replied, bringing up a video on his tablet. "She was on duty at the ER triage desk at 2:30 a.m. She took a covert recording on her personal phone when Ray Vance and Daniel Vance brought your mother into the facility."
Miller pressed play.
The video was grainy, shot from behind a medical supply cart, but the audio was crystal clear.
On the screen, Ray was gripping my mother's arm tightly. Evelyn was crying, barely able to stand. Daniel was holding her phone.
"Sign the property transfer form, Evelyn," Ray’s voice rasped on the video. "Sign it right now, or you’re spending the night outside."
"Ray, please... it's freezing," Evelyn sobbed. "Let me call Maya... please let me call my daughter..."
"Maya doesn't care about you!" Daniel spat in the video, snatching her phone away. "She hasn't called in years! You signed the papers for me, Mom, now sign the land deed for Ray so we can get paid!"
"I won't... it's Maya's inheritance... her father left that land for her..." Evelyn choked out.
Ray’s face darkened. He grabbed Evelyn by the neck—his fingers digging into her throat in the exact pattern of the bruises I had found—and dragged her toward the side exit door.
"Then you can freeze out there until you change your mind," Ray hissed, opening the heavy metal door and shoving the elderly, barefoot woman into the howling whiteout blizzard.
The door slammed shut. Daniel locked it from the inside.
I stared at the tablet screen. My body went completely numb. The room seemed to spin as the reality of what they had done hit me with full, crushing weight. They didn't just abandon her. They forced her out into sub-zero temperatures and locked the door in her face while she begged for my name.
Marcus laid a heavy hand on my shoulder to steady me.
"Is this footage legally admissible?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion.
"It’s rock-solid," Captain Miller confirmed. "It establishes intent, attempted murder, kidnapping, and felony assault. We’ve already issued arrest warrants for Raymond Vance and Daniel Vance."
"No," I said, looking up at Miller. "Don't arrest them yet."
Miller blinked, startled. "Ms. Lin, these men are dangerous criminals—"
"They are also desperate," I interrupted. "And desperate men do reckless things. If you arrest them now, Ray’s high-priced lawyers will post bail by nightfall and tie this up in discovery for years. I want them stripped of every defense first. I want them to lose everything before they ever set foot in a prison cell."

"What are you going to do?" Miller asked.
"Ray's entire real estate portfolio is backed by a single regional lender—First National of Oakridge," I said, leaning forward. "Northstar just acquired fifty-one percent of First National's distressed debt portfolio thirty minutes ago. Which means... I am now Ray Vance's chief creditor."
