Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

Alexander arrived exactly twenty-eight minutes later. He didn't look like the man who had walked out on us ten years ago. Gone was the soft, corporate veneer; in his place stood a man with eyes like flint and a jawline that suggested he had spent the last decade hardening his soul.

When he saw Sofia—the daughter he hadn't spoken to in years, huddled under a blanket while I tried to clean the blood from her collarbone—the temperature in the room dropped. He didn't weep. He didn't scream. He simply walked to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and watched the street below through the window blinds.

“Who?” he asked, his voice barely a tremor.

“Carmen Robles,” I said, my hands still shaking as I reached for the peroxide. “And Javier.”

Alexander’s glass cracked in his hand. He didn't even notice the blood trickling from his palm. Carmen Robles was a name whispered in the darkest corners of Dallas real estate—a woman who built empires on the broken promises of others. She had been targeting Sofia’s Uptown condo for months. It wasn't just property; it was a leverage point, a key to the kind of wealth that would wash her family’s questionable history clean.

“She thinks she’s protected,” Alexander said, his voice a low, dangerous hum. “She thinks this is a family dispute. She has no idea she’s walked into a minefield.”

While Sofia finally drifted into a medicated sleep, Alexander and I sat at my small kitchen table. He wasn't the man I divorced; he was a strategic monster, and for the first time, I was grateful for it. We didn't talk about the past. We talked about the ledger. Carmen Robles hadn't just beaten a bride; she had engaged in interstate fraud, tax evasion, and extortion. She had left a digital and financial trail that was wide enough to drive a tank through.

I handed him the folder I’d been keeping—the notes on Carmen’s various "donations," the strange LLCs she had insisted Sofia sign into during the engagement. Alexander looked at them, and a terrifying, slow smile spread across his face.

“She wants the condo?” he whispered. “I’ll give her the condo. I’ll give her the whole damn building, right on top of her head.”
