Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Crane Meridian

The executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Whitmore Global Logistics tower in downtown Chicago was an architectural masterpiece of glass, steel, and walnut. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic, breathtaking view of Lake Michigan sparkling under the bright morning sun.

Normally, this room hummed with the quiet confidence of corporate titans discussing billions of dollars in global commerce.

Today, it felt like a execution chamber.

At exactly 9:00 a.m., Ethan Whitmore walked through the double doors. He didn't wear a tie, his top button was undone, and his sleeves were rolled up slightly—a subtle, menacing signal that he wasn't here to negotiate; he was here to wage war.

Seated around the massive conference table were eight senior executives, including Richard Vance, the Chief Operating Officer. Richard, a smooth, charismatic man in his early forties with impeccably styled brown hair and an expensive tailored suit, looked up with a welcoming, slightly nervous smile.

"Ethan," Richard said, standing up and extending a hand. "Good morning. Security downstairs said you called an emergency board session. Is everything alright with the wedding preparations? If Camille needs any more adjustments to the rehearsal schedule, just—"

Ethan didn't take Richard’s hand. He walked past him, pulled out his own executive chair at the head of the table, and sat down in absolute silence.

The air in the room instantly turned to ice.

Richard’s hand lingered in mid-air for a second before he slowly pulled it back, a flicker of unease crossing his handsome face. He cleared his throat. "Uh... Ethan? Is something the matter?"

"Sit down, Richard," Ethan said. His voice was barely above a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a surgical scalpel.

Richard sat down, glancing nervously around the table at the other executives, who were sitting in rigid, uncomfortable silence.

Ethan tapped a single finger against the polished walnut table. A wall-mounted smart screen behind him suddenly flashed to life, projecting a massive, crystal-clear digital document onto the glass partition.

It was an encrypted email header, complete with timestamps, IP addresses, and financial transaction receipts routed through an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands.

Sender: [email protected] Recipient: [email protected] Subject: Q3 Acquisition Manifests & Health Status Update Attachment: Master_Shipping_Routes_Encrypted.enc ($250,000 wire confirmation)

The room erupted into quiet murmurs of shock. Several executives gasped and turned to stare at Richard, whose face drained of all color, turning the shade of spoiled milk.

"What... what is this?" Richard stammered, his charm evaporating instantly. "This is a fabrication! This is a forged document! Ethan, you can't possibly believe—"

"Quiet, Richard," Ethan interrupted smoothly. He stood up, resting his knuckles on the table and leaning forward. "You’ve been leaking our proprietary logistics data to Victor Crane for eight months. You provided Crane Meridian with our tender bids before they were submitted to the ports of Rotterdam and Singapore. And worse... you coordinated with Daniel Miller to monitor my medical profile, ensuring my private physician’s quarterly physicals were intercepted and altered."

"That’s a lie! You have no proof!" Richard shouted, panic bleeding into his voice as he stood up, knocking his chair back against the floor. "I’ll sue you for defamation! I’ll—"

The boardroom doors swung open.

Two federal agents from the Department of Justice’s antitrust and corporate fraud division walked into the room, flanked by Chief Vance.

Agent Miller—no relation to Daniel—flashed a federal badge.

"Richard Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, industrial espionage, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion," the agent announced, stepping forward with steel cuffs gleaming in the morning light. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the federal agents grabbed Richard’s arms and slammed him against the glass wall to cuff him, the COO lost all composure, thrashing wildly and screaming across the table at Ethan.

"You think you’ve won?!" Richard shrieked, spittle flying from his lips as his expensive suit jacket became bunched up around his neck. "Victor Crane is already two steps ahead of you! He owns the municipal port leases in four key Midwestern hubs! Even if you lock me up, even if you ruin Camille, Crane Meridian is going to swallow Whitmore Logistics whole by the end of the quarter! You can't stop the buyout, Ethan! You're already dead!"

Ethan watched him with cold, impassive eyes.

"Tell Victor," Ethan said softly as the agents dragged Richard toward the elevators, "that ghosts don't belong in the shipping business."

May you like

When the doors closed behind them, the boardroom remained dead silent. The other executives sat frozen, staring at their CEO in absolute awe and terror.

Ethan straightened his cuffs, looked around the table, and said, "Now that the trash has been taken out, let's review our Q3 financial projections."
