Chapter 9 - The Grand Altar Trap

A collective gasp rippled through the rows of seated guests.
Camille’s triumphant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror. She clawed at Ethan’s sleeve, her voice a frantic, hissing whisper.
"Ethan! What are you doing?! Stop this right now! Everyone is watching!"
"Let them watch," Ethan said calmly, gently brushing her hand away as if she were nothing more than an annoying insect.
He raised his voice slightly, addressing the crowd and the live cameras broadcasting to millions of viewers across financial news networks and social media platforms.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, and members of the press," Ethan began, his tone formal and authoritative. "You were invited here today to celebrate a union between myself and Ms. Camille Foster. However, what you are actually witnessing is the public exposure of a multi-million-dollar corporate espionage and criminal conspiracy."
Absolute pandemonium broke out in the pavilion.
Flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm. Reporters from The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and local Chicago outlets leaped from their folding chairs, shouting questions and shoving microphones toward the altar.
Chief Vance walked briskly down the central aisle, carrying a stack of federal arrest warrants and court-certified indictments, placing them directly on the minister’s podium.
"Thirty-six hours ago," Ethan continued, his voice cutting cleanly through the roaring noise of the crowd, "Ms. Foster, in active coordination with my primary commercial rival, Victor Crane of Crane Meridian Holdings, and my former Chief Operating Officer, Richard Vance, attempted to slowly poison me using synthetic neurotoxins designed to mimic cognitive decline. Their goal was simple: incapacitate me before our wedding, forge my signature on fraudulent medical transfer documents, and illegally seize a controlling twenty percent equity stake in Whitmore Global Logistics."
Camille let out a choked, desperate scream and turned to run down the aisle.
She didn't make it three steps.
Two female federal marshals stepped out from behind the floral pillars, gently but firmly grabbing her arms and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. The crystal crystals of her Vera Wang gown sparkled brilliantly in the afternoon sun as she thrashed and sobbed in total disgrace, her designer veil tearing away and fluttering down onto the manicured grass.
"You're ruining my life!" Camille shrieked, her makeup running in dark streaks down her face as the cameras zoomed in mercilessly. "You're a monster, Ethan! Let me go!"
"Take her away," Ethan commanded quietly.
As the marshals hauled Camille away in handcuffs past rows of gasping, horrified socialites, absolute silence fell over the pavilion once more.
Ethan adjusted his lapel, looking out at the stunned faces of his family and guests.
"The wedding is officially canceled," Ethan announced evenly. "However, the reception will proceed as planned—only today, we are celebrating something far more important: justice, corporate integrity, and the people who actually protect the foundations of this family."
He turned his gaze from the crowd and looked directly toward the front row, where Evelyn, Elena, and little Sophie were sitting.
Ethan walked down the steps of the altar, bypassed the shocked society matrons, and stopped right in front of Elena and Sophie.
The cameras swung around, broadcasting the moment to millions.
Ethan knelt down on one knee in front of four-year-old Sophie, who was holding her stuffed rabbit tightly in her arms.
"Sophie," Ethan said softly, his voice carrying warmth and emotion the public had never seen from the Ice Man. "You saved my life. And I want to make a promise to you and your mother, right here in front of the whole world."
Sophie blinked her big blue eyes. "Are we still having cake?"
May you like
Ethan laughed—a rich, genuine, booming laugh that echoed across Lake Michigan—and pulled a small, beautifully wrapped gift box from his jacket pocket.
"We are having all the cake you want, sweetie," Ethan smiled. "And starting today, you and your mother will never have to worry about anything ever again."
