Chapter 4 - The Awakening at Sunrise

The digital clock on the dashboard of the utility van read 6:15 AM as Sarah pulled into the underground parking structure of St. Jude’s Hospital.

The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a heavy, oppressive blanket of gray fog that clung to the asphalt like a shroud. Sarah didn't care about the weather. Her mind was entirely locked onto a single, immovable point in time: sunrise. The hour when the stock market opened, when bank managers arrived at their desks, and when Liam Sterling would wake up to find that his entire existence had evaporated.

She walked up the stairs to the fourth-floor Intensive Care Unit, her boots clicking sharply against the polished linoleum floor.

The night nurse, a kind-eyed woman named Brenda who had looked after Chloe with gentle compassion, met her outside Room 412. Brenda looked exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes.

"Mrs. Brooks," Brenda whispered, placing a comforting hand on Sarah’s arm. "You should know... her vitals dipped around 4:00 AM. We stabilized her, but Dr. Mitchell says the swelling in her brain hasn't decreased. There's... there's no change."

"Thank you, Brenda," Sarah said softly, her voice steady. "Can I go in?"

"Of course. Take all the time you need."

Sarah pushed open the heavy wooden door and stepped into the sterile, cold atmosphere of the ICU room. The rhythmic, agonizing beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor filled the silence.

Chloe lay motionless in the center of the bed, her head wrapped in thick white bandages, a clear oxygen mask strapped tightly across her bruised and swollen face. The vibrant, laughing twenty-four-year-old girl who loved baking pastries, rescuing stray dogs, and reading poetry on rainy afternoons was completely gone, replaced by a fragile, battered shell tethered to the earth by plastic tubing and electrical wires.

Sarah pulled a chair close to the bedside, sat down, and took Chloe’s cold, limp hand in her own.

"I'm here, baby," Sarah whispered, pressing her lips against her daughter’s knuckles, fighting back the burning ache in her throat. "I'm right here. And I promise you, by the time the sun is fully up over this city, the people who did this to you will know what it feels like to have everything taken away."

She sat there in the quiet room as the sky outside the high window slowly transitioned from bruised purple to a sickly, pale yellow.

At exactly 7:00 AM, Sarah’s encrypted tactical phone buzzed sharply in her jacket pocket.

She pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

ALERT: STERLING MARITIME LOGISTICS - ASSET FREEZE CONFIRMED. CORPORATE ACCOUNTS OVERDRAWN BY AUTOMATED LIQUIDATION. SEC INVESTIGATORS ARRIVED AT STERLING CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS AT 6:45 AM. FEDERAL WARRANTS ISSUED FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION.

A second notification popped up immediately afterward:

LOCAL POLICE DISPATCH INTERCEPTED: URGENT 911 CALL PLACED FROM STERLING RESIDENCE. SUBJECT LIAM STERLING REPORTING COMPLETE SYSTEM LOCKOUT AND SUSPICIOUS FINANCIAL DISCREPANCIES.

Sarah looked down at Chloe’s pale face, gently squeezing her hand.

"It's starting, sweetheart," Sarah murmured. "Time for me to go collect."

She stood up, straightened her jacket, and walked out of the hospital room without looking back.
