Chapter 4 - The Schoolgate Showdown

By Tuesday morning, Hazel was back in her routine. I drove her to her private academy in my SUV, dropping her off at the front gates with a kiss on the forehead and a tight hug.

“Mommy?” Hazel asked softly, holding her backpack straps. “Are we ever going back to the old house?”

“We’re staying in our home, sweetie,” I assured her, smoothing her hair. “And nobody is ever going to scream at us or flip a table in our house again. I promise.”

“Is Daddy mad at me?”

My heart twinged, but I kept my voice firm and reassuring. “Daddy made some very wrong choices, Hazel. None of this is your fault. Your job is just to be a ten-year-old girl and enjoy your day.”

After dropping Hazel off, I called the school’s headmaster, Mr. Harrison.

“Joanne,” Mr. Harrison said warmly. “Happy New Year. How can I help you today?”

“Mr. Harrison, I’m sending over a court-certified copy of an Emergency Protective Order against Derek Campbell and Belinda Campbell. Effective immediately, neither of them is authorized to pick up Hazel, visit her during school hours, or access her academic records.”

“Understood completely,” Mr. Harrison said smoothly. “Our security team has been notified. Only you are listed on her pickup manifest.”

I knew Belinda. She was a woman driven entirely by optics and spite. She couldn't stand losing control, and she certainly couldn't accept that her precious grandson-substitute had been stripped away.

Sure enough, at 2:15 PM, during the afternoon dismissal, a beaten-up 2012 Honda Civic pulled up to the school’s VIP drop-off lane.

Belinda stepped out, wearing a loud floral dress and oversized sunglasses, trying to look like a wealthy grandmother picking up her pampered grandchild.

She marched toward the front courtyard where the students were lined up.

“Hazel! Hazel, sweetie! Come to Grandma!” Belinda called out, pushing past two parents.

Hazel caught sight of her and immediately shrank back behind her teacher, Ms. Gable.

Ms. Gable stepped in front of Hazel. “Ma'am, I need you to step back. Parents only in the pickup zone.”

Belinda scoffed loudly, raising her voice so every wealthy parent in the courtyard could hear. “I am her grandmother! Her mother is an abusive, cold-hearted corporate snob who had my son wrongfully arrested on New Year’s Eve! I am here to take my granddaughter to a safe home!”

Several parents turned and stared, whispering among themselves.

Belinda smirked, believing she was successfully humiliating me in public. She reached out to grab Hazel’s hand. “Come on, Hazel! Don't listen to these people!”

“Step away from the child immediately!”

Two heavy-set private security officers stepped out from the main lobby, flanking Belinda.

“Get your hands off me!” Belinda shrieked, flailing her arms. “Do you know who I am? My son is a senior technician!”

“Ma'am, your name is Belinda Campbell,” the security lead said, pulling a laminated sheet from his belt. “You are under an emergency restraining order. You are trespassing on private school property.”

“This is absurd! Joanne Larson paid you off!” Belinda screamed, her face contorting in rage. “She’s a fake! She lives on borrowed money!”

Before Belinda could take another step toward Hazel, two San Diego Police squad cars pulled up to the curb with their sirens chirping.

The officers who stepped out were the exact same officers who had responded to my house on New Year’s Eve.

“Belinda Campbell,” the lead officer said, stepping up to her with handcuffs ready. “You were explicitly served with a restraining order this morning. You are under arrest for violation of a protective order and criminal trespassing.”

“No! You can’t arrest me! I’m a senior citizen!” Belinda screamed, thrashing as the silver handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists in front of fifty wealthy parents, teachers, and administrators.

Cell phones came out instantly. Parents recorded the entire meltdown as Belinda was marched, screaming and cursing, into the back of the police cruiser.

I watched the entire scene from my SUV parked across the street, taking a calm sip of green tea.

Belinda wanted an audience. I made sure she got one.
