Chapter 8 - The Cost of Treason

Six Months Later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a sleek, modern beach house in Encinitas, California.

Hazel was running across the lush green lawn with a goldendoodle puppy we had adopted two months ago, her laughter ringing out against the sound of crashing ocean waves.

My business had expanded, and I had been promoted to Executive Vice President of Global Logistics, doubling my salary and giving me complete control over my work schedule. My life was peaceful, clean, and full of genuine love.

My phone rang on the patio table. It was my private investigator, giving me his final monthly update.

“Afternoon, Joanne,” he said. “Just closing out the file on Derek Campbell.”

“How is he?” I asked, sipping an iced latte while watching Hazel play.

“He’s working thirty-five hours a week as a late-night custodian at a commercial gym,” the investigator reported. “Fifty percent of his paycheck is automatically garnished by the state for your child support order. He’s living in a tiny 300-square-foot studio apartment in an industrial district.”

“And Belinda?”

“She had to sell her car and give up her rental apartment. She’s currently living in a rural trailer park in El Cajon on a fixed social security check. From what the neighbors say, Derek and Belinda haven't spoken a word to each other since the court date.”

I smiled softly. The toxic bond that had destroyed my marriage couldn't survive a single drop of poverty. Once there was no more of my money to feast on, the parasites devoured each other.

“Thanks, Mark. Close the file. I won't be needing any more updates.”

“Understood, Ms. Larson. Have a great summer.”

I hung up the phone and set it face-down on the table.
