Chapter 2 - The Stage Is Set

The silence in the grand ballroom was so dense you could hear the soft hum of the hotel’s air filtration system.

Julian’s mouth hung open. The smug, condescending sneer that had defined his face for the last six years melted into a look of sheer, unadulterated terror. Beside him, Camilla froze, her hand hovering in mid-air where it had previously rested on his arm. Her eyes darted from me to the stage, then back to Julian, searching his face for a denial that never came.

I took the three stairs to the stage with measured, deliberate grace. The silk of my dark blue dress rustled quietly. Chairman Malcolm Reed stepped aside, offering me the microphone with a respectful nod that sent shockwaves through the senior executive table.

I adjusted the mic, looking directly into the sea of two hundred stunned faces. My eyes settled on Julian, who stood near the back, frozen like a statue under the glare of the crystal chandeliers.

“Thank you, Malcolm,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the high-caliber speakers. “And good evening to the employees, partners, and guests of Aurelia Systems.”

A collective murmur rippled through the room. Employees who knew me only as ‘Julian’s quiet wife’—the woman who occasionally dropped off baked goods or sat silently at holiday dinners—were nudging each other, their phone screens lighting up as they began frantically searching my name.

“Eighteen months ago,” I continued, resting my hands lightly on the mahogany podium, “Aurelia Systems was bleeding capital. Mismanagement, predatory vendor contracts, and unchecked executive spending pushed this company to the brink of insolvency. Tonight, that era ends.”

Julian took a involuntary step forward, his face flushed a dark, mottled red. “Audrey!” he snapped, his voice cracking slightly as he tried to maintain an air of authority. “What is this farce? Malcolm, what is she doing up there?”

Malcolm didn’t hesitate. He stepped up to a second microphone. “Mr. Vance, sit down and keep quiet. Ms. Vance is speaking as the majority shareholder and new Chairwoman of the Board.”

A loud gasp erupted from the sales department table.

“Northstar Holdings,” I resumed smoothly, “has injected forty million dollars in equity as of four o’clock this afternoon. We now hold fifty-eight percent of voting shares. My first act as majority owner is simple: restoring integrity to this firm.”

I turned my gaze directly to Camilla Price. She stiffened, clutching her red designer handbag to her chest like a shield.

“Effective immediately,” I said, my tone as cool as glacier water, “the position of Communications Director is abolished pending an internal investigation. Ms. Price, your corporate access cards have been deactivated. Security will escort you from the premises.”

“What?!” Camilla shrieked, her composed facade shattering instantly. “You can’t do that! Julian, tell her she can’t do that!”

Julian opened his mouth, but before he could utter a word, two tall security guards in black suits stepped out from the side doors and positioned themselves on either side of Camilla.

“Ms. Price,” one of the guards said firmly. “Please surrender your event badge and walk toward the exit.”

“This is insane!” Camilla hissed, her cheeks burning red. “Julian, do something! You’re the incoming president!”

“He isn’t,” I interrupted from the microphone. “Julian Vance is currently suspended from his role as Chief Strategy Officer, pending the outcome of a forensic audit into four million dollars of unauthorized vendor transfers to a shell company registered in Delaware.”

Julian’s face went from red to ash-white. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to catch himself against the corner of a high-top cocktail table.

“Furthermore,” I added, looking straight at Camilla, “Ms. Price, before you leave the building, you will return the diamond drop earrings you are wearing. They were stolen from my private residence three weeks ago, and a police report has already been filed with the Boston Police Department.”

The room went dead silent. Two hundred people turned their heads in unison to stare at Camilla’s ears.

Camilla’s hand flew to her earlobes. Her eyes widened in horror as she realized the sheer scale of the trap she had walked into. With trembling fingers, she ripped the diamond earrings from her ears and threw them onto the nearest linen table before turning on her high heels and sprinting out of the ballroom, tears streaming down her face, flanked by security.

I looked down at Julian, whose eyes were filled with panic, confusion, and a desperate, rising rage.

“The party is over, Julian,” I said softly into the microphone. “Welcome to Northstar.”
