Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Lies

By noon, I was seated behind the massive oak desk in the Chief Strategy Officer’s suite. My team of forensic accountants had transformed the room into a war room, with stacks of financial ledgers, server logs, and legal briefs covering the table.

Malcolm walked in, holding a steaming mug of coffee and a fresh manila folder.

“It’s worse than we thought,” Malcolm said, setting the folder in front of me. “Julian wasn’t just embezzling vendor funds. He was actively trying to destroy Aurelia’s valuation so Apex Global could execute a hostile takeover at pennies on the dollar.”

I opened the folder. “And who owns Apex Global?”

“We traced the final beneficiary node twenty minutes ago,” Malcolm replied, leaning against the desk. “Fifty percent belongs to Julian. The other fifty percent belongs to a man named Arthur Price.”

I froze. “Camilla’s father.”

“Exactly,” Malcolm nodded grimly. “Arthur Price runs Vanguard Dynamics—Aurelia’s primary competitor in military-grade communication tech. Camilla wasn't just Julian’s mistress, Audrey. She was a plant sent by her father to groom Julian, exploit his ego, and use him to gut Aurelia from the inside.”

A cold laugh escaped my lips.

For months, Julian had felt like a criminal mastermind, thinking he was playing me for a fool while enjoying the affection of a glamorous younger woman. In reality, he was nothing more than a pawn being manipulated by a rival executive who used his pathetic vanity to ruin him.

“Does Julian know?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Malcolm smirked. “He still thinks Camilla is his ride-or-die partner. He’s been trying to post her bail all morning, but his personal accounts were frozen two hours ago by federal court order.”

I closed the folder with a sharp snap. “What about the patent transfers?”

“Blocked,” Malcolm said. “Because Northstar completed the majority buyout yesterday afternoon, any corporate asset transfers authorized without board approval in the last ninety days are legally void. We caught it just in time.”

At that moment, my personal phone rang on the desk.

The screen displayed an unknown number from a Boston landline. I tapped the speakerphone icon.

“Audrey?”

Julian’s voice was hysterical, background noise suggesting he was calling from a public payphone or a gas station.

“Audrey, please answer me! My cards aren't working! The bank says my accounts are under an administrative hold! I can’t even buy a sandwich!”

“Hello, Julian,” I said calmly.

“Audrey, you have to undo this!” he begged, his arrogance completely gone, replaced by frantic desperation. “This has gone too far! I’m sleeping in my car! They towed the Porsche from the hotel parking lot!”

“The Porsche was leased under Aurelia Systems, Julian,” I reminded him. “And since you are no longer an employee, the vehicle was reclaimed.”

“Audrey, please! I’m your husband!”

“Not for long,” I replied. “My attorneys filed for divorce this morning on grounds of adultery, financial fraud, and marital abandonment. You will receive the papers at your lawyer’s office tomorrow.”

“You’re ruining my life!” he screamed into the receiver.

“No, Julian. You ruined your own life the moment you mistook my patience for weakness,” I said coldly. “Oh, and by the way... you might want to stop trying to post bail for Camilla.”

There was a long pause on the line. “What... what do you mean?”

“Apex Global,” I said softly. “Camilla and her father used you to siphon four million dollars into an account you can never access. She didn't love you, Julian. She was working for Vanguard Dynamics. You ruined your marriage and your career for a woman who treated you like a disposable tool.”

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. I could hear his shallow, ragged gasps as the crushing weight of the truth finally destroyed whatever remained of his spirit.

“Enjoy your afternoon, Julian,” I said, and hung up.
