Chapter 8 - The Severed Cord

The days following the gala were a whirlwind of legal maneuvering and social fallout. My parents, desperate to save their reputation, tried to frame my speech as a "psychotic break." They hired a lawyer to threaten me with a defamation suit, hoping the intimidation would force me back into silence.
However, they had underestimated the modern medical community. The hospital board, having already investigated the forged documents they sent to sabotage my fellowship, had moved from curiosity to outright protection of their star resident. Dr. Sterling, the Chief of Surgery, didn't just support me—she weaponized the hospital’s legal team on my behalf.
I sat in a conference room as my lawyer systematically dismantled my parents' claims. We presented the records: the dates they had been traveling while I was in the ICU, the invoices for the private care nurses I had hired because my parents refused to assist, and finally, the proof that the "medical records" they had submitted to the fellowship board were fabricated.

"This is not a family dispute," my lawyer said, his voice cold and final. "This is a case of harassment, attempted fraud, and emotional abuse."
When I finally looked at my parents, they looked small. The power they had wielded over me—the threat of being "ungrateful," the fear of abandonment—had evaporated. I signed the documents for a permanent restraining order and a legal severance of our relationship. As I walked out of the building, the air felt lighter than it ever had. The cord wasn't just stretched; it had been surgically excised.
