Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Five years later, the morning sun poured through the windows of my office. The plaque on the door read Dr. Elena Vance, Chief of Surgical Oncology.
I stood at the window, looking down at the city. My phone buzzed—a reminder of a lunch date with Sarah and her kids. I reached for my white coat, still hanging on the hook by the door. The name was still embroidered there, but it didn't feel like a heavy armor anymore. It was just a job, a life, a beautiful, hard-won existence.
My assistant knocked lightly. "Dr. Vance? The surgical team is ready for the morning briefing."
"I'm coming," I said.
I picked up my badge and stepped into the hallway. I didn't think about my parents. I hadn't thought about them in months. They hadn't won, and they hadn't lost; they had simply become irrelevant. They were a footnote in a story that had become a masterpiece of my own design.
