Chapter 4 - The Shift in Power

Madison tried everything. She turned on the waterworks, she tried to guilt Kyle, and then, when that didn't work, she turned her venom on me. "You’ve always hated me," she spat. "You’ve been plotting this since the engagement. You made this blanket just to humiliate me."

"I made that blanket for a child who hadn't been born yet," I replied. "I made it with love, something you clearly don't understand."

Kyle didn't intervene this time. He was standing by the window, watching his wife with a clarity that was painful to witness. He was seeing the woman he’d married for the first time—seeing the greed that had always been there, just masked by expensive perfume and designer labels.

"Madison, we’re leaving," Kyle said, his voice quiet.

"Excuse me?"

"You're leaving. You can go to your mother’s. I’m staying here with Mom to figure out how to manage this."

Madison looked at him as if he’d grown a second head. "You’re choosing her over me? Over our baby?"

"I’m choosing my son’s future over your greed," Kyle said. It was the most beautiful sentence I had ever heard.

Madison didn't scream. She didn't cry. She simply walked out the door, her heels clicking on the porch, leaving behind the silence of a failed marriage. She thought she was leaving with nothing, not realizing she had left with everything—except for the one thing she really wanted.

Once the car pulled away, Kyle finally crumbled. He sat at the kitchen table, burying his face in his hands. "I didn't know she was like this, Mom. I thought... I thought she was just picky. I thought she just wanted the best for the baby."

"Sometimes the best for the baby isn't a designer label, Kyle," I said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Sometimes, the best thing is a parent who knows the value of hard work, of patience, and of keeping a promise."

"What do we do now?"

"We open the storage unit," I said. "And we see what your father left for you."
