Chapter 5 - The Discovery

We drove to the city center the next day. The storage unit was buried deep in a basement level of a converted industrial building. The air was cool and smelled of cedar and old paper.

When we turned the key, the door rolled up to reveal shelves meticulously organized. Frank had been a man of order. There were boxes labeled by year, by project, by memory.

But in the center of the room sat a crib.

It was an antique, hand-carved, with a small brass plaque on the side: For the boy who will carry our name.

Kyle walked over to it, running his hand along the polished wood. He found a small wooden box sitting on the mattress. Inside was a letter, addressed to both of us.

“If you’re reading this, it means you’ve finally realized that the world doesn't run on price tags,” the letter began. “I spent my life building a future for a family I hoped would be wise enough to cherish it. If Madison is the one who found this, then she’ll never see it. She’ll never have the code to the security locker. But if you’re standing here, Kyle, then you’ve chosen the right path. Use this to give your son a foundation. Not a handout. A foundation.”

Beneath the letter were the deeds to the land, now worth a fortune, and a collection of documents that proved Frank had been an early investor in the very company that was now developing the site.

"He was always a step ahead," Kyle said, a smile finally breaking through his grief.

"He knew his son," I said. "He knew you’d come around."

We spent the afternoon cataloging the collection. There were photos—hundreds of them—of Kyle as a boy, photos that had been lost in the move years ago. There was Frank’s old watch, his tools, and a journal detailing the growth of the business.

It wasn't just money. It was a history. It was the story of who we were, preserved in a way that no designer store could ever replicate.
