Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t pull away. I simply looked down at his hands gripping my shoulders, then back into his eyes with a cold, unyielding calm.

“You always said I needed to learn my place, Jonathan,” I said softly. “So let me show you where I kept the evidence.”

With a swift, practiced motion, I reached behind my back, unhooked the hidden zipper of my custom designer wedding gown, and let the heavy layers of white silk and tulle slide off my shoulders. It pooled around my feet on the altar steps like sea foam, leaving me standing in a sleek, charcoal-grey business suit underneath.

The chapel descended into a dead, suffocating silence.

The silk blouse I wore under the jacket had been specifically tailored with removable sleeves. With two quick movements, I unbuttoned the cuffs and rolled the fabric up to my shoulders.

Every camera lens in the room zoomed in.

The pale skin of my arms was a canvas of survival. Fading purples, deep yellows, and faint silver scars mapped out the physical reality of the past eleven months. There were the precise finger-shaped bruises from the night he locked me in the wine cellar; the sharp, linear marks from where he had shoved me against the marble countertop when I questioned his quarterly balance sheets; the dark contusions left behind every time he demanded 'obedience.'

In the front row, several high-profile society wives pressed their hands over their mouths. A few prominent investors looked away, their faces turning pale with embarrassment and shock.

“For eleven months,” I spoke clearly into the altar microphone, “Jonathan Duncan maintained that I was emotionally unstable. He told our friends, our family, and the police that I was prone to self-harm and hysterical episodes. He used my medical privacy as a shield for domestic torture.”

I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive, holding it up for the room to see.

“Included on this drive are date-stamped medical logs, emergency room admittance records under pseudonyms, and high-resolution photographs of every single injury. But more importantly... there are audio recordings.”

I pressed a button on a small remote in my palm.

Through the chapel's high-end surround-sound audio system, Jonathan’s voice boomed out loud and clear for everyone to hear.

“You’re the one who makes me act this way. If you tell a single soul about this, your career, your reputation, and your family will be destroyed before you can even pack a bag.”

The recording looped into another voice—Rosalind’s.

“A powerful man deserves complete obedience inside his own home. Don't disgrace this family with your whining.”
