Chapter 6 - Federal Interventions

The federal agent who had accompanied Clara stepped forward, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Jonathan’s wrists. The metallic click echoed sharply against the quiet chapel walls.

As the cuffs locked into place, Jonathan’s mask of absolute control shattered permanently. He didn't look remorseful; he looked feral. He thrashed against the federal agent, his eyes bulging with rage as he glared at me through teeth bared in a snarl.

“You think you’ve won?” Jonathan screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria as the marshals dragged him down the aisle, past the rows of horrified guests. “You’re tied to those loans! Your name is on the guarantor forms! When Duncan Apex collapses, you go down with me! You’re legally ruined! You hear me? RUINED!”

I stepped to the edge of the altar, looking down at him with an expression of absolute pity.

“You really should have checked my credentials before you forged my signature, Jonathan,” I replied calmly.

Evelyn Vance stepped in to finish the thought, handing a crisp document to the federal agent holding Jonathan’s arm.

“As a certified forensic accountant with federal contracting clearance,” Evelyn said, her voice ringing with finality, “she didn't just find your fraudulent loan guarantees, Jonathan. She filed the formal federal whistleblower exemption disclosures eighteen months before you even proposed to her. The government has known about your shell companies since the day you set the trap. She wasn't your victim, Jonathan. She was the bait.”

Jonathan stopped dead in his tracks. The blood rushed entirely from his face, leaving him looking hollowed out, defeated, and utterly small. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he hadn't trapped a naive, delicate bookkeeper. He had willingly walked into a federally coordinated sting operation designed to dismantle his entire empire brick by brick.
