Chapter 1: THE SMELL FROM HIS SIDE OF THE BED

For nearly six months, Emily couldn't understand where the smell was coming from.
At first, it was faint.
Just a strange odor she noticed occasionally when she climbed into bed at night. She assumed it was dirty laundry or perhaps something trapped inside the air-conditioning vents.
But as the weeks passed, the smell became impossible to ignore.
It always seemed strongest on Daniel's side of the bed.
Emily washed every sheet, pillowcase, and blanket twice. She bought expensive detergents and scented candles. She even replaced their bedroom curtains.
Nothing helped.
The smell always returned.
One evening, while folding laundry, she casually mentioned it.
"Daniel, do you smell that?"
Her husband barely looked up from his phone.
"Smell what?"
"That rotten smell."
He shrugged.
"I don't smell anything."
Emily frowned.
How could he not smell it?
The odor was getting worse every day.
Soon, it began affecting her sleep. She would wake up in the middle of the night feeling nauseous.
One morning she found herself standing beside the bed, staring at Daniel while he slept.
The smell seemed strongest around him.
For a moment, a disturbing thought crossed her mind.
Could it be coming from Daniel himself?
The idea felt ridiculous.
Daniel was always clean and well-groomed. He showered twice a day and wore expensive cologne.
Still, something about the situation felt wrong.
Very wrong.
A few days later, Emily decided to thoroughly clean the bedroom.
While vacuuming under the bed, she noticed something strange.
Daniel had become unusually protective of his side.
Whenever she tried to move his nightstand or organize his belongings, he would immediately stop her.
"I'll do it later," he always said.
But he never did.
That night, Emily watched him carefully.
When he thought she was asleep, Daniel quietly got out of bed.
He knelt beside the mattress.
And for several seconds, he simply stared at it.
Then he gently pressed his hand against the side as if checking something hidden inside.
Emily kept her eyes closed.
Her heart was pounding.
The next morning, she asked him about it.
Daniel froze.
Only for a second.
But she noticed.
"What are you talking about?" he said.
"You were touching the mattress last night."
He laughed nervously.
"I couldn't sleep. That's all."
The explanation didn't make sense.
But Emily let it go.
At least for the moment.
Weeks passed.
The smell became unbearable.
Friends who visited the house noticed it too.
One even asked whether a dead animal might be trapped somewhere inside the walls.
Embarrassed, Emily hired an exterminator.
The exterminator inspected the entire property.
The attic.
The basement.
The ventilation system.
Everything.
When he finished, he shook his head.
"I can't find anything."
Emily felt helpless.
Then one afternoon, something happened that changed everything.
Daniel left unexpectedly for a three-day business trip.
As she was changing the bedsheets that evening, Emily noticed a dark discoloration beneath the fitted sheet.
She pulled the fabric away.
There, near the center of Daniel's side of the mattress, was a large brown stain she had never seen before.
Her stomach tightened.
She touched it.
The fabric felt damp.
And the smell...
The smell was coming directly from the mattress.
Not the room.
Not the carpet.
Not the walls.
The mattress.
For several minutes she simply stood there staring.
Every instinct told her to stop.
To wait for Daniel.
To pretend she hadn't found anything.
But another voice inside her whispered that she needed answers.
Now.
Emily walked into the garage.
She returned carrying a utility knife.
Her hands trembled as she knelt beside the bed.
Slowly, she pushed the blade into the side of the mattress.
The fabric split open.
Instantly, a horrific wave of stench exploded into the room.
Emily stumbled backward, gagging.
Tears filled her eyes.
She covered her nose and forced herself to look inside.
At first she saw only foam padding.
Then something black.
Something wrapped tightly in plastic.
Something far too large to belong inside a mattress.
Her pulse thundered in her ears.
With shaking hands, she pulled the package closer.
May you like
The plastic shifted.
And what she saw underneath made her scream so loudly that neighbors later said they heard it from across the street.
