Chapter 2: WHAT WAS HIDDEN INSIDE THE MATTRESS

Emily's scream echoed through the house.

For several seconds, she couldn't move.

She couldn't breathe.

She simply stared at the object hidden inside the mattress.

The black plastic had partially torn open when she pulled it free.

Beneath it was something she never expected to find.

A human hand.

Pale.

Motionless.

And unmistakably real.

Emily staggered backward and crashed into the bedroom wall.

Her legs gave out beneath her.

The room spun around her as panic flooded every part of her body.

She grabbed her phone with trembling fingers and dialed 911.

"Please... please hurry," she cried. "I think there's a body in my mattress."

The operator kept her on the line until police arrived.

Within minutes, flashing lights filled the street.

Officers rushed inside and secured the bedroom.

Emily sat wrapped in a blanket on the living room couch while detectives carefully examined the mattress.

One officer emerged from the room nearly an hour later.

His face was grim.

Emily immediately knew her nightmare was real.

The package hidden inside the mattress contained human remains.

The body belonged to a young woman.

And based on the condition of the remains, investigators believed she had been dead for months.

Possibly longer.

Emily felt her stomach twist.

For months she had slept only inches away from a corpse.

Every night.

Every single night.

Detectives began asking questions.

How long had she lived there?

Who purchased the mattress?

Did anyone else have access to the house?

The answer to nearly every question pointed toward one person.

Daniel.

The mattress had arrived shortly after they moved into the house.

Daniel had insisted on ordering it himself.

He had refused to let delivery workers bring it upstairs.

Instead, he carried it into the bedroom alone.

At the time, Emily thought nothing of it.

Now every detail felt terrifying.

The next morning, investigators revealed something even more disturbing.

The victim had been reported missing nearly a year earlier.

Her name was Sarah Mitchell.

Twenty-six years old.

Last seen leaving work one evening.

Her disappearance had remained unsolved.

Until now.

News stations quickly picked up the story.

Reporters crowded outside Emily's home.

Headlines described the shocking discovery hidden inside an ordinary suburban bedroom.

Meanwhile, police desperately searched for Daniel.

But there was one problem.

He had vanished.

The business trip he claimed to be taking didn't exist.

The hotel reservation was fake.

The company he said he was meeting with had never heard of him.

It was as if he had disappeared into thin air.

Then investigators uncovered another bombshell.

Daniel's driver's license was fake.

His passport was fake.

Even his birth certificate was fake.

The man Emily had been married to for four years wasn't Daniel at all.

His entire identity had been fabricated.

When detectives showed Emily a collection of photographs recovered from government databases, her blood ran cold.

The man she knew as Daniel appeared under at least five different names across multiple states.

And everywhere he went, strange disappearances seemed to follow.

The deeper investigators dug, the darker the story became.

Several missing women had vanished in cities where "Daniel" had previously lived.

The timelines matched perfectly.

For years, authorities had never connected the cases.

Now they finally had a common suspect.

Three days later, police searched a storage unit rented under one of Daniel's aliases.

What they found inside left even veteran detectives speechless.

The unit contained dozens of boxes.

Inside were photographs.

Jewelry.

Cell phones.

Driver's licenses.

Handwritten journals.

Personal belongings belonging to missing women from across the country.

It looked like a collection.

A collection of trophies.

Evidence of crimes stretching back years.

Perhaps decades.

The case exploded nationwide.

Law enforcement agencies from multiple states joined the investigation.

And yet the most important question remained unanswered.

Where was Daniel?

Days turned into weeks.

No sightings.

No phone calls.

No financial activity.

Nothing.

It was as though he had vanished from the face of the earth.

Then, late one night, investigators received a tip from a remote mountain town nearly 300 miles away.

A local resident reported seeing a man matching Daniel's description entering an abandoned cabin deep in the woods.

A tactical team was immediately dispatched.

As officers surrounded the cabin before dawn, they believed they were finally about to capture one of the country's most wanted fugitives.

But when they forced open the door, they discovered something they never expected.

The cabin wasn't empty.

Daniel was there.

Waiting.

And on the table beside him sat a stack of photographs.

At the very top was a recent picture of Emily.

Taken only days earlier.

Which meant one horrifying thing.

May you like

Even after disappearing...

Daniel had still been watching her.
