Chapter 5 - Shadows and Sanctuary

The sun dipped below the Baltimore skyline, casting long, bruised shadows of purple and orange across the stained-glass windows of Grayhaven House.

Inside the secure guest suite, the atmosphere was vastly different. The heavy oak door was bolted from the inside, and two elite guards stood silently outside. On the plush Persian rug in the center of the room, Lila was sitting cross-legged, laughing softly as Damian Volkov—the most feared mafia boss on the East Coast—knelt on the floor opposite her, clumsily trying to fold a paper rabbit.

I stood by the window, watching the surreal scene unfold, a cup of untouched tea growing cold in my hands.

“No, like this,” Lila signed earnestly, grabbing Damian’s massive, calloused thumb and guiding it through the crease of the paper. Her pink hearing device blinked rhythmically in the dim light.

Damian watched her hands with intense focus, his rugged face softening in a way no one who knew his reputation would ever believe possible. “Like that?” he signed back, his fingers moving with surprising grace for a man whose hands had broken bones and pulled triggers.

Lila clapped her hands in silent delight, flashing a brilliant, gap-toothed smile.

Damian looked up, catching my gaze across the room. He carefully set the paper rabbit down on the rug and rose to his feet, walking over to where I stood by the window. Up close, his presence was overwhelming, filled with a raw, magnetic masculinity that made my breath hitch.

“You’re still worried,” he observed quietly, his dark eyes searching my face.

“How can I not be?” I whispered, looking down at my hands. “Marcus runs half the security detail. If he realizes what Lila can do—if he realizes you’re recovering—he won't wait for you to die. He’ll storm this suite.”

Damian reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against my chin, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look into his eyes. A jolt of electricity raced down my spine, hot and undeniable.

“Let him try,” Damian murmured, his voice fierce, steady, and utterly unwavering. “For five years, I built this empire on blood and fear, Elena. I thought love was a weakness, a vulnerability an enemy could exploit. But since yesterday morning, when your daughter walked into my room and placed her hand over a heart that everyone else had given up on… I realized something.”

“What’s that?” I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“I haven't spent the last forty-eight hours fighting the poison just to survive,” Damian whispered, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to my eyes. “I fought it because for the first time in my miserable life, I have something worth living for. And I will burn Grayhaven House to ash before I let anyone lay a finger on either of you.”

Before I could answer, the heavy security lights in the courtyard below suddenly flickered, hissed, and died.
