Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Empire

An hour passed in suffocating silence.

The clinic lobby was quiet, save for the rhythmic humming of the fluorescent lights and the distant sound of rain beating against the roof.

Alexander remained seated on the hard plastic chair in the waiting room. The tan puppy lay curled up on his lap, its small head resting directly over Alexander’s wrist, as if monitoring the man’s pounding pulse.

The heavy glass doors of the clinic opened, and Lionel walked in, holding a tablet computer. His face was gray, drained of all color.

"Sir," Lionel said softly, stepping closer. "We have a massive problem."

Alexander didn't raise his head. "Is it Tokyo?"

"No, sir. Tokyo was just the trigger," Lionel whispered, handing him the tablet. "While you were in transit, someone leaked a falsified financial audit of your primary holding company to the London Stock Exchange. The narrative is that you missed the Tokyo signing because you’ve fled the country to avoid embezzlement charges."

Alexander’s eyes narrowed into slits of dark steel. "Who leaked it?"

"The IP address was traced back to your executive vice president's private office in Mayfair," Lionel said. "Julian Vance."

Julian. The man Alexander had pulled out of middle management eight years ago. The man he had treated like a younger brother, given equity, power, and absolute trust.

"Julian," Alexander repeated smoothly, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "He coordinated this with the Tokyo board. They wanted me out of the way so they could trigger the hostile takeover clause in my absence."

"Your stock has crashed thirty percent in the last two hours, sir," Lionel said nervously. "The board of directors in London has called an emergency vote of no confidence for six o'clock tonight to remove you as Chief Executive. If you aren't in that boardroom in London by six... Julian takes control of everything you built."

Alexander looked at his watch. It was 3:15 PM. London was a two-hour drive under normal conditions, but in this weather, with the M6 clogged with rain accidents, it would take three.

Before Alexander could speak, the double doors to the surgical suite clicked open.

Dr. Sarah Lin, the head veterinary surgeon, stepped out into the hallway, pulling down her surgical mask. She looked exhausted, her scrubs stained with fluid, but her eyes were bright.

Alexander stood up immediately, setting the tan puppy gently down on the chair. "Doctor?"

Dr. Lin offered a tired, warm smile. "It was touch and go for a while, Mr. Roses. A fractured femur, three broken ribs, and severe internal bleeding from what looks like a kick or a fall. But we stopped the bleeding, stabilized her temperature, and repaired the bone."

Alexander felt a massive weight lift off his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced in six long years. "Will she live?"

"She’s a fighter," Dr. Lin said. "She’s hooked up to an IV and oxygen right now, but she woke up five minutes ago. She’s going to make a full recovery."

The tan puppy on the chair suddenly perked its ears up, letting out a sharp, happy YIP!

Dr. Lin looked down at the small tan dog, then up at Alexander's ruined three-thousand-pound suit. "I have to ask, sir... most people wouldn't have brought a street stray into an advanced trauma center on ten minutes' notice. The bill for a procedure like this is substantial."

Alexander pulled a black metal American Express card from his wallet and laid it on the desk without looking at it. "Cover everything. The surgery, the recovery, the best medicine you have. Keep them both here in your private care until I return."

"Return from where, sir?" Dr. Lin asked.

Alexander looked at Lionel, then down at his stained hands. The cold, lethal flame that had built his billion-pound empire flared back to life in his chest, brighter and deadlier than ever before.

"I have a rat to catch in London," Alexander said coldly.
