Chapter 8 - The Eyes of the Guardian

Evening fell over Rosewood Manor, painted in shades of deep purple and warm gold.
Inside the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone hearth, casting a warm, flickering light across the floorboards.
Alexander sat in his favorite leather armchair by the fire, a book resting unread in his lap.
At his feet, curled together on a thick, soft fleece blanket, lay Clara and Leo. Clara was sound asleep, her small chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful cycles. Leo lay with his head resting over his sister’s back, his amber eyes open, watching the flames.
Alexander looked at the two dogs, then up at the mantelpiece above the fireplace.
Sitting in the center of the mantel was a framed photograph of a beautiful, dark-haired eight-year-old girl with a bright, radiant smile—his daughter, Clara.
For six years, looking at that photograph had brought Alexander nothing but suffocating guilt, cold grief, and a desperate drive to drown his pain in money and power. He had built a fortress around his heart, believing that if he never loved anything again, he could never be hurt again.
But a ten-week-old stray dog on a rain-soaked street in Manchester had torn down that fortress in five minutes.
Leo suddenly lifted his head, looked up at Alexander, and let out a soft, warm huff. He stood up gently, leaving his sleeping sister, and walked over to Alexander's chair.
The dog placed its front paws on Alexander’s knee, standing up to press its small nose against the man's cheek.
Alexander reached out, wrapping his large, powerful arms around the small tan dog, pulling him close to his chest.
"Thank you, Leo," Alexander whispered into the dog's soft fur, his voice thick with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in a lifetime. "You saved me."

Leo licked a quiet tear from Alexander’s cheek, then rested his broad head on the man’s shoulder.
Outside, the rain began to fall again, drumming softly against the glass windows of the grand estate. But inside, by the warmth of the fire, the billionaire who had lost his soul had finally found his way back home—guided by the stubborn, unconditional love of a stray dog who refused to let him walk away.
