Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Boardroom

While the public celebrated the triumph of justice, the federal investigation was only just beginning to peel back the outer layers of the conspiracy.

Federal prosecutor Sarah Sterling sat across from Harrison in his private office later that afternoon, reviewing a thick stack of confiscated encrypted documents.

"Edgar Vance was just the front man, Mr. Cole," Prosecutor Sterling said, sliding a photograph across the mahogany desk. "And Walter Crane was the accountant. But the capital backing this hostile takeover—the millions used to fund the offshore accounts—came from a much larger shadow organization."

Harrison picked up the photograph. It showed a sleek, gray-haired man shaking hands with Walter Crane at an exclusive country club in Zurich six months prior.

"Julian Thorne," Harrison murmured, recognizing the face immediately. Thorne was the reclusive billionaire behind Thorne Capital, one of the most ruthless corporate raiders on Wall Street.

"Exactly," Sterling nodded. "Thorne has been trying to absorb Cole Industries' defense-contracting subsidiary for three years. When you repeatedly rejected his buyout offers, he decided to eliminate you from the equation entirely. Edgar and Walter were just his instruments."

Harrison’s eyes narrowed into cold slits. "And now that Edgar and Walter are in federal custody?"

"Thorne is already distancing himself," Sterling replied grimly. "His legal team is filing injunctions, claiming the transactions were legitimate corporate scouting. Without a direct paper trail linking Thorne's signature to the poison acquisition, it will take months to bring federal charges against him."

Harrison set the photograph down on the desk. A slow, determined smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Months?" Harrison said quietly. "Prosecutor Sterling, let me give you a piece of advice about corporate raiders like Julian Thorne. They are like vultures—they only circle when they smell blood in the water. If they think the carcass is still alive and kicking back, they make mistakes."

"What do you have in mind, Mr. Cole?" Sterling asked, raising an eyebrow.

"We announce an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning," Harrison said, his voice dropping into a tone of calculated strategy. "We leak a false report to the financial press: Cole Industries faces imminent liquidity crisis following executive arrests. Thorne won't be able to resist a dying animal. He'll make a move to snap up our remaining shares at a discount."

Prosecutor Sterling stared at him for a moment, a slow grin spreading across her face. "You're going to bait the trap."

"I'm going to finish the war," Harrison corrected.
