Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs Shut

The following morning at 9:00 AM, the executive boardroom of Cole Industries was packed to capacity.

Financial news networks broadcasted live outside the building as a sleek black town car pulled up to the main entrance. Out stepped Julian Thorne himself, impeccably dressed in a charcoal bespoke suit, flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys. He wore the confident, predatory smirk of a man who believed he was walking in to pick the bones of a fallen empire.

Thorne strode through the double doors of the boardroom, where Harrison Cole sat at the head of the table, flanked by federal prosecutors and state regulators.

"Harrison," Thorne purred, walking right up to the head of the table with his hand extended in false camaraderie. "I heard about the unfortunate tragedy with your executives. Truly devastating. But business waits for no man. I’m here to offer a rescue package—penny on the dollar, of course."

Harrison didn't take Thorne’s hand. He remained seated, his hands folded neatly on the mahogany wood.

"Julian," Harrison said smoothly. "You must have caught an early flight from Zurich. Or did you manage to coordinate the wire transfers from your New York office?"

Thorne’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though he recovered quickly. "I have no idea what you're insinuating, Harrison. I'm simply a concerned investor looking to stabilize the market."

"Are you?" Harrison asked calmly.

He nodded toward Prosecutor Sterling, who stood up and pressed a remote control on the wall console. The massive projection screen behind the table flickered to life.

Instead of a financial report, the screen displayed a high-definition, recorded video call dated three days prior. On the screen appeared Julian Thorne speaking directly to Walter Crane over an encrypted channel, explicitly discussing the financial structuring of the hostile takeover and the timeline for the corporate restructuring following Harrison's expected death.

The room erupted into shocked whispers. The cameras from the media pool outside—allowed in for the open session—flashed blindingly as reporters captured every second of Thorne’s face draining of color.

"This—this is a deep fake!" Thorne stammered, stepping back as his attorneys frantically began whispering in his ear. "Fabricated evidence! Unlawful wiretapping!"

"It's not wiretapping when your own private banker turns state's evidence, Julian," Harrison said, standing up to his full height. He looked down the table at the cornered raider with absolute contempt.

Before Thorne could turn toward the door, two federal marshals stepped out from the partition, their silver badges catching the light. They clamped steel handcuffs around Julian Thorne’s wrists with a sharp, definitive click.

"Julian Thorne, you are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and solicitation of murder," Prosecutor Sterling announced clearly for the recording microphones.

Thorne glared at Harrison, his mask of corporate invincibility completely shattered, revealing a desperate, angry man beneath. "You think this makes you safe, Cole? The sharks are always circling! You can't stop the market!"

"Maybe not," Harrison replied coldly, watching as Thorne was escorted out of the boardroom in disgrace. "But I know how to feed the right ones to the bottom feeders."
