Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Secrets

The young woman flinched violently as the beam of the flashlight hit her face, shielding the infant with her entire body.
“Don’t touch her,” the girl whispered, her voice cracked and dry from dehydration. “Please... don’t take her away.”
Detective Brooks lowered her flashlight instantly, switching off the blinding strobe effect and adopting a soft, soothing tone. “It’s okay. We’re police officers. You’re safe now. No one is going to take your baby.”
Dr. Naomi Reed pushed past the officers, stepping carefully into the cramped alcove with her medical bag open. “Can I look at the baby? Just to make sure she’s breathing okay?”
The girl hesitated, her tear-filled eyes darting from Naomi to Detective Brooks, before slowly lowering her arms.
In the dim light, Naomi revealed a tiny infant—no more than a few days old—swaddled in a pink blanket. The baby’s skin was a healthy pink, her tiny fists curled against her cheeks.
“She’s beautiful,” Naomi murmured softly, immediately pulling a stethoscope from her bag to check the infant's vitals. “Heart rate is strong. But she’s dehydrated. We need to get them both to the hospital immediately.”
Upstairs, Lydia stood frozen in the kitchen doorway, watching as emergency medical technicians wheeled a stretcher down the hall. When she saw the young mother emerge from the secret alcove, holding the newborn, the color drained completely from Lydia’s face.
“Mom...” Lydia whispered, turning to look at Margaret. “What is this? Who is she?”
Margaret did not look up. She sat slumped at the kitchen table, her hands trembling in her lap. “She had nowhere to go, Lydia. She was alone. I helped her.”
“You kept her locked in a basement?” Lydia’s voice rose, cracking with a mixture of horror and betrayal. “You hid a mother and a newborn behind a false wall while I sat upstairs eating dinner with you every week?”
“I protected them!” Margaret snapped, her voice suddenly sharp with defensive fury. “The system destroys girls like Chloe! They take their babies away before the ink on the birth certificate is even dry! I gave her a safe place!”
“Without medical oversight? Without registering the birth?” Detective Brooks stepped out of the basement, her face carved in stone. She turned to the patrol officers. “Call for two transport ambulances. And place Margaret Hale under arrest.”
“Arrest?” Margaret stood up, her posture stiff with outrage. “I saved that girl’s life! I delivered her baby safely when no one else would!”
“You performed unlicensed medical procedures, held a vulnerable individual in an unregistered enclosure against her will, and falsified vital records,” Olivia stated coldly, snapping the handcuffs onto Margaret’s wrists. “Right now, you’re looking at kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and reckless endangerment.”

As the officers escorted Margaret toward the front door, she looked back once at her daughter.
Lydia turned her face away, unable to meet her mother’s eyes.
