Chapter 5 - Lydia’s Despair

Back at the house on Maplewood Avenue, the police had cleared the crime scene tape, leaving the home feeling hollow, haunted, and profoundly altered.

Lydia sat on the living room couch where she had rested three nights ago, her hand pressed against her expanding belly. The seven-month pregnancy, which should have been a time of quiet joy and anticipation, now felt heavy with dread.

Eli sat beside her on the rug, piecing together a puzzle while his stuffed fox rested nearby.

“Mom?” Eli asked softly, not looking up from his puzzle piece. “Are we going to see Grandma again?”

Lydia swallowed hard, staring at the empty doorway that led down to the basement. “No, buddy. Not for a very long time.”

“Did she do bad things?”

“She made choices that hurt people,” Lydia said carefully, her voice shaking slightly as she fought back tears. “Sometimes people think they are doing the right thing, or they try to control things they shouldn't... and it leads to terrible places.”

The front door unlocked, and Daniel stepped into the hallway. His face was etched with exhaustion. He had spent the last twenty-four hours dealing with police interviews, reporters staking out his workplace, and the shattering realization of what had been happening right beneath his family’s roof.

Daniel dropped his keys on the entry table and walked into the living room, kneeling beside Lydia and placing his hands over hers.

“How are you holding up?” Daniel asked gently.

“I feel like I don't know my own life,” Lydia whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek. “I grew up in this house. I believed my mother was a healer, a respected nurse who dedicated her life to helping others. And all this time... there was a secret room behind the laundry shelves. What if I had known? What if I had walked down there sooner?”

“You didn't know, Lyd,” Daniel reassured her, squeezing her hands. “None of us did. Your mother was a master at keeping up appearances.”

“And what about this baby?” Lydia placed her other hand over her stomach, her voice dropping to a frightened murmur. “My mother was going to be the primary midwife for my delivery, Daniel. She had already set up the room. She was planning everything.”

The chilling realization hung in the air between them. If Margaret had successfully controlled Chloe’s pregnancy and birth, what had she intended for Lydia’s baby? Was Lydia’s pregnancy just another asset in her mother’s hidden empire?
