Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The call disconnected with a sharp click.

Before the echo of Scott’s voice could fully fade, Officer Miller was barking orders into his shoulder radio.

“All units, suspect has initiated contact! He is likely monitoring the perimeter from an adjacent street or vehicle! Secure all entry points!”

“Clara, we need to get you and Chloe out of here right now,” Detective Ramos said urgently, opening the car door. “We’re moving you to a secure regional safehouse. Let’s go.”

Within minutes, an unmarked tactical van escorted us away from the house, sirens silent, cutting through the dark San Diego streets. Chloe held onto my hand so tightly her fingers ached, but she didn't cry. She looked out the armored window with eyes far too wise for her years, whispering, “We’re safe now, right, Mom?”

“Yes, baby,” I promised, kissing her forehead. “We’re safe now.”

While the police mobilized a city-wide manhunt for Scott, I spent the remainder of the night in a secure government safehouse, diving deeper into the nightmare I had unknowingly stepped into.

Detective Ramos had provided me with a case file containing background records on Scott’s previous life—records he had meticulously erased before we met.

The truth was staggering.

Scott wasn't just a controlling father; he was a con artist and a fugitive from family court. Five years ago, after a bitter custody dispute with Chloe’s biological mother, Elena Vance (ironically sharing a last name with the officer), Scott had abducted Chloe during a court-mandated weekend visit. He had fabricated documents, convinced local authorities that the mother had abandoned them, and fled across state lines before settling in San Diego.

He used the sedative mixture not just to keep Chloe quiet, but to stunt her physical development so she wouldn't resemble her older childhood photographs if anyone recognized her.

And the worst part? Chloe’s biological mother hadn't given up. For five years, she had spent every penny she owned hiring private investigators, scouring national missing child databases, never stopping her search.

“Can we call her?” I asked Ramos when he checked in on us at dawn.

Ramos looked surprised, then nodded slowly. “I already contacted her case investigator in Oregon. She’s boarding a flight to San Diego right now.”
