Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

“Freeze! Federal agents! Drop the weapon!” Detective Ramos commanded, stepping forward with his badge and service pistol raised.
Scott didn't hesitate. With unnatural speed, he lunged to the side, grabbing a heavy metal end table and hurling it directly at Ramos. The table crashed into the detective’s legs, sending him sprawling to the floor and knocking his firearm skidding across the slick wooden floorboards.
“Dad! No!” Chloe screamed, burying her face in Elena’s arms.
Scott stepped over Ramos, his eyes locked entirely on me and Elena. A twisted, hateful sneer contorted his face.
“You thought you could call the cops and play the hero, Clara?” Scott sneered, raising the hunting knife as he closed the distance between us. “You were supposed to be obedient. You were supposed to stay out of my way!”
He raised the knife, stepping over the edge of the rug.
Adrenaline surged through my veins, washing away every ounce of fear. I didn't back down. As Scott lunged forward to grab Elena and Chloe, I didn't think twice—I swung the heavy brass lamp with all the strength in my body, smashing it directly across the side of his head.
Clang!
The brass impact echoed like a church bell. Scott staggered sideways, his balance thrown off by the heavy blow, dropping the hunting knife as he crashed violently into a bookshelf, sending books cascading down around him.
Before he could recover, Detective Ramos scrambled across the floor, retrieved his service weapon, and vaulted over the sofa, driving Scott face-first onto the ground.
“Federal Marshal! Don't move!” Ramos roared, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Scott’s wrists with brutal efficiency.
Scott thrashed and cursed, kicking his legs, but he was completely trapped. As officers flooded through the shattered doorway from the backup tactical team, pinning Scott to the floor and hauling him upright, the nightmare finally came to an absolute, undeniable end.

Scott cast one final, venomous glare toward me before the officers dragged him out into the night.
“It’s over,” Ramos panted, wiping sweat from his forehead as he holstered his weapon and turned to us. “He’s going away for a very, very long time.”
