Chapter 5 - The Extraction

The climax of the ritual was a harrowing descent into the psyche of the Arriaga family. As Tita’s chanting grew more fervent, the air in the hut became dense and pressurized. Alejandro, pinned under the weight of Martha’s frantic attempts to reach the boy, suddenly felt his perception shatter.

He was no longer in the hut. He was standing in a hallway of his own mansion—the place where his wife, Sofia, had died. The entity, fueled by the darkness in the house and the poison in the food, had used his own grief as a doorway. He saw Sofia standing at the end of the hall, her back to him.

"You left me to die, Alejandro," the specter whispered in a voice that was half-Sofia, half-hissing serpent. "You built this empire to bury your pain, but you only built a cage."

Alejandro reached out, his hand trembling. This was the parasite’s true weapon: it didn't just eat the stomach; it ate the identity. "I didn't leave you," he choked out, his vision blurring. "I tried to save you. And I will save our son."

In the physical world, Emiliano was arching off the altar, his eyes black pits. Tita grabbed a bowl of liquid mercury and an ancient copper needle. "Alejandro! Pull the connection! It is tied to your guilt! Renounce the grief, or the boy dies!"

Alejandro looked at the phantom of his wife and then at his son’s writhing form. He realized that for two years, he had been a ghost in his own life, hoarding money and building walls to protect himself from the pain of loss. That fear had been the anchor for the monster.

"I let you go, Sofia!" Alejandro screamed, his voice filled with a painful, liberating honesty. "I am done hiding behind the walls of my own failure! Take it back! Take it all!"

He tore the obsidian medallion he had worn since the day of his wife's death from his neck and threw it onto the altar.

The reaction was instantaneous. A blinding, white-hot vacuum erupted from the floor. Martha shrieked as the energy sucked the malice right out of her, leaving her huddled and weeping on the floor, stripped of her dark influence. The shadows that had been coiling around Emiliano dissolved into thin air.

With a final, gargantuan convulsion, Emiliano expelled a thick, black vapor from his mouth. It swirled once, like a dying fire, and then evaporated into the cold mountain air. The boy went limp. Silence reclaimed the hut, save for the ragged breathing of the survivors.
