Chapter 8 - The Midnight Escape Goes Wrong

The heavy oak door of the master bedroom clicked shut, plunging us into shadow.

“He knows,” I whispered, my voice shaking as I paced across the hardwood floor. “Arthur and Brenda are gone, the house is locked down, and Evan knows we’re downloading his files. He’s going to grab Emma and run.”

Marcus’s voice came through the tiny earpiece hidden beneath my hair, clear and calm despite the urgency in the air. “Stay calm, Carrie. My team is moving into position around the perimeter now. Do not engage him alone. Wait for the breach signal.”

“I can’t just wait!” I hissed, panic clawing at my throat. “She’s down the hall! If he realizes the game is up, there’s no telling what he’ll give her to keep her quiet!”

Before Marcus could answer, the floorboards outside our door creaked violently. Heavy, rapid footsteps marched down the hallway, stopping right outside our door.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

“Carrie! Open the door!” Evan’s voice roared from the hallway, stripped of all its smooth, calculated charm. It sounded feral, desperate, and terrifyingly unhinged.

I froze, my hand flying to my mouth.

“I know what you’ve been doing!” Evan screamed, slamming his shoulder against the wood. The door frame splintered with a sharp crack. “You called lawyers! You think you can take my work away from me?! Open this door, or I swear to God I’ll take Emma right now and you’ll never see either of us again!”

Crash!

On the second strike, the deadbolt sheared straight through the molding, and the door flew wide open.

Evan stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot, holding a heavy leather medical case in one hand and a syringe loaded with a clear, shimmering liquid in the other.

“You ruined everything, Carrie,” he snarled, stepping into the room with deliberate, threatening strides. “We were so close. The neural integration phase was working. And you had to play the righteous mother.”

I backed away until I hit the balcony glass doors, my hands raised defensively. “You’re insane, Evan. You’re not a doctor—you’re a kidnapper hiding behind a white coat!”

“I’m a pioneer!” he shouted, raising the syringe as he lunged toward me.

“Now!” I screamed into the hidden mic.

Suddenly, the front windows downstairs shattered with an earth-shattering crash. Heavy combat boots pounded up the stairs, shouting commands in a synchronized chorus.

“FBI! Federal Child Protection Unit! Drop the weapon!”

Evan froze mid-stride, his head whipping toward the doorway just as three heavily armed operatives in tactical gear swarmed into the master bedroom. Before Evan could raise the syringe or turn toward the balcony, a taser dart struck him squarely in the chest.

With a choked gasp, Evan’s eyes rolled back, his muscles seizing violently as he collapsed hard onto the hardwood floor, the medical case flying from his hand and spilling its contents across the rug.

Hands grabbed my arms—gentle, guiding hands.

“Mrs. Brooks? You’re safe. We’ve got you,” a calm, professional voice assured me.

“Emma,” I gasped, ignoring the chaos around me as I tore past the agents. “Where’s my daughter?!”

“Secure. Agent Vance has her downstairs in the extraction vehicle. She’s unharmed, Mrs. Brooks.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming relief broke across my face as I sprinted down the hallway, bursting into Emma’s room. There, wrapped in a heavy blanket and clutching her stuffed rabbit, sat my little girl, staring wide-eyed at the flashing red and blue lights of the federal vehicles filling the street below.

When she saw me, she burst into tears and ran straight into my arms.

“Mommy...!”

“I’ve got you, baby,” I sobbed, burying my face in her hair as the nightmare finally, mercifully, came to an end.
