Chapter 9 - The Truth About Emma’s Condition

Three weeks later, the crisp Portland autumn had given way to the biting chill of early winter.
Sitting in the sunlit consultation room of the Pacific Northwest Pediatric Medical Center, I watched through the glass partition as Emma laughed and played with a set of building blocks alongside a licensed trauma therapist. Her cheeks had color in them again. Her eyes were bright, clear, and free of the heavy, chemical haze that had clouded her existence for three long years.
Dr. Alana Vance—a leading pediatric neurologist who had no ties to Evan’s shady institute—slid a comprehensive medical dossier across the polished oak table toward me.
“The tests are conclusive, Carrie,” Dr. Vance said gently, folding her hands together. “Emma does not have a degenerative neuro-genetic disorder. Her brain structure is entirely normal for a seven-year-old.”
The breath rushed out of my lungs in a long, shuddering sigh of relief. “Then why... why did she have those night terrors and blank stares?”
“Mild, manageable childhood parasomnia,” Dr. Vance explained, shaking her head with quiet disgust. “Completely harmless, and easily outgrown. But over the last three years, Evan’s compound—a low-dose synthetic neuro-suppressant administered transdermally while she slept—systematically induced artificial cognitive suppression. He wasn't treating a disease, Carrie. He was creating the symptoms to justify his ongoing research and keep both you and Emma entirely dependent on him.”
A cold anger rippled through my chest, though it was tempered by profound gratitude. Evan was currently sitting in a federal holding facility awaiting trial on multiple counts of child endangerment, medical fraud, and unlawful experimentation, with zero chance of bail. His father’s clinic had been raided, its license revoked, and its dark archives seized by federal prosecutors.

“Will she make a full recovery?” I asked, looking back through the glass at my daughter.
“100%,” Dr. Vance smiled warmly. “Children are remarkably resilient when they’re surrounded by genuine love and safety. The nightmares will stop completely within a few months.”
