Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Light

Six months later.

Spring had returned to Chicago. The garden behind the academy was in full bloom, filled with sweet-smelling white jasmine and purple lavender.

In the sunlit classroom on the second floor, Claire sat at a low wooden table with six young students, teaching them advanced ASL literature.

At the head of the room stood Noah, who was now nine years old. He had grown taller, his cheeks full of healthy color, his gray-blue eyes bright with intelligence and confidence. He was leading the class in translating a poem Lily had written years ago.

From the doorway, Grant watched silently, holding two cups of fresh coffee.

He had completely divested from all illegal operations, liquidating the remaining assets of Mercer Enterprises and transitioning his entire organization into legitimate global shipping, logistics, and philanthropic trusts. The name Mercer was no longer spoken in whispers in dark alleyways—it was praised in community halls and educational boards across the Midwest.

Noah finished the lesson, bowed dramatically to his classmates, who waved their hands in silent cheer, and ran over to Grant, taking one of the coffee cups to set it on the desk before hugging his father’s waist.

DAD! CLAIRE SAID WE CAN GO TO THE LAKE THIS AFTERNOON! Noah signed eagerly.

Grant laughed, kneeling down to ruffle his son’s hair. ONLY IF YOU FINISH YOUR MATH EXERCISES, YOUNG MAN.

Noah rolled his eyes dramatically, making Claire laugh from across the room.

Claire walked over, accepting the warm coffee cup from Grant, her hand lingering against his.

“How was the board meeting?” Claire asked.

“The city approved the expansion,” Grant said, his eyes filled with quiet pride. “We’re opening two new branch academies in Detroit and St. Louis next spring. Fully funded.”

Claire shook her head in disbelief, leaning her cheek against his arm. “Lily would be so proud.”

“She’s watching us,” Grant said gently, turning his head to press a kiss against her temple. “All of them are.”
