Chapter 10 - Where the Dark Cannot Reach

That evening, as the sun dipped low beneath the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant ribbons of pink, gold, and violet, Grant, Claire, and Noah walked along the sandy shoreline of Lake Michigan.

The water was calm, reflecting the twilight sky like a giant mirror.

Noah ran ahead along the water's edge, chasing the gentle waves in his rain boots, tossing small smooth stones across the surface of the lake.

Claire stood with her back pressed against Grant’s chest, his broad arms wrapped comfortably around her waist, shielding her from the cool evening breeze.

“I used to come to this beach three years ago,” Claire whispered, watching the sun sink into the horizon. “Every time I closed my eyes, all I could hear was the silence of that empty apartment. The unanswered calls.”

Grant rested his chin gently against her head, holding her tighter. “And now?”

Claire reached down, placing her hands over Grant’s where they rested against her waist.

“Now, I hear everything,” Claire said softly. “I hear Noah’s laughter. I hear the wind. I hear the life we’re building.”

Noah turned around on the wet sand fifty yards ahead.

He stood against the glowing background of the setting sun, his silhouette sharp against the golden light. He looked at Claire and Grant, a huge, radiant smile spreading across his face.

Slowly, carefully, Noah raised both hands toward the sky.

He didn't make the sign for HELP. He didn't make the sign for DARK.

He raised his thumb, his index finger, and his pinky finger, pressing his palm outward against the golden light of the setting sun—the universal sign for I LOVE YOU.

Claire felt tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spill down her cheeks. She raised her own hands into the evening air, returning the sign with all the strength and love in her heart.

Grant stepped up beside her, raising his hand beside hers, joining his fingers with hers as they signed together into the warm spring night.

The storm had passed. The shadows had fled.

And in the warm, unbroken light of the family they had fought to save, they knew that the dark would never find them again.
