Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Ledger

Three days passed in a tense, deceptive quiet.

While the public news reported high-level corporate restructurings and sudden retirements across several major Chicago logistics firms, the underworld knew the truth: Matteo Soriano was systematically dismantling every asset Felix had ever touched.

Inside the estate, the atmosphere had shifted dramatically. The cold, solemn halls were now filled with the sound of light laughter. Gracie had taken a particular liking to the massive estate grounds, spending her afternoons in the glass greenhouse, while Nora threw herself into her new role with meticulous care, reorganizing the domestic operations with a nurse's efficiency.

Matteo found himself spending less time in his armored basement war room and more time in the sunlit library overlooking the gardens.

On Thursday afternoon, Matteo sat at his heavy oak desk, reviewing financial ledgers, when a soft knock came at his open door.

Gracie stood in the doorway holding a drawing drawn in bright, chaotic crayons.

"Come in, Gracie," Matteo said, setting down his pen and gesturing for her to approach.

She scampered across the thick Persian rug and handed him the paper. It was a drawing of the mansion, painted in yellow, with a giant black cat sitting on the roof, and three small figures holding hands near the front door—a tall man in a dark suit, a woman in a red dress, and a small girl.

Matteo looked at the drawing for a long time. Something thawed deep inside his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since he was a boy before his father dragged him into the blood and iron of the syndicate.

"Is this me?" Matteo asked, pointing to the tall figure in the suit.

"Yes," Gracie said proudly. "You’re the one who keeps the monsters away."

Matteo leaned back, a soft, rare smile appearing on his lips. "I try, little one."

Just then, Nora walked into the library carrying a stack of inventory files. She stopped when she saw Gracie leaning against Matteo’s knee.

"Gracie, I told you not to bother Mr. Soriano while he’s working," Nora said apologetically, stepping forward to retrieve her daughter.

"She’s not bothering me, Nora," Matteo said smoothly, placing the drawing carefully inside his top desk drawer alongside his most sensitive documents. "In fact, she’s the highlight of my afternoon."

Nora’s cheeks flushed a delicate shade of pink. Over the last three days, seeing Matteo out of his suit coat, sitting with her daughter, talking about simple things like books and gardens, she had begun to see the man behind the terrifying title of Don. He was fierce, yes, but he possessed a deep, protective honor that made her feel safer than she had ever felt in her life.

"I finished the audit of the kitchen and medical supply orders for the estate," Nora said, handing him a blue folder. "Most of it was completely normal, but... I found something strange in the invoices from last month."

Matteo’s sharp eyes locked onto hers. "What kind of strange?"

"Before I worked here, I spent four years managing the pharmaceutical inventory at St. Anthony’s," Nora explained, sitting in the chair across from him. "The estate's previous manager approved three separate deliveries of industrial-grade organophosphates disguised as organic greenhouse pesticides."

Matteo took the folder, his jaw tightening as he scanned the line items. Organophosphates were heavy neurotoxins—the exact base compound used in the synthetic poison Felix had been trying to feed him.

"The deliveries were brought in through the service gate," Nora continued, her voice growing cold. "And they were signed for by Carl—the head gardener."

Matteo slammed the folder shut. "Sal!" he called out.

The heavy door opened instantly as Sal stepped into the room.

"Bring Carl to the wine cellar," Matteo ordered, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy tone. "And have the security team sweep the greenhouse immediately."

Nora stood up quickly, pulling Gracie close to her skirts. "Matteo... is it still here?"

"No," Matteo said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "It means Felix didn't just leave a traitor in my ranks when he ran—he left an active sleeper agent inside my home."

He looked at Nora, his eyes burning with intense protection. "Take Gracie up to your suite. Sal’s second-in-command, Bruno, will stand guard at your door. Do not come out until I personally come to get you."

Nora nodded, her hands gripping Gracie’s shoulders. "Please be careful, Matteo."

It was the first time she had called him by his first name without the formal prefix. Matteo caught her eye, giving her a brief, reassuring nod that carried an unspoken promise.

"I am always careful, Nora," he said softly. "Now go."
