Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Docks

An hour later, in the cold, stone-walled wine cellar thirty feet below the estate, Carl the gardener was strapped to a heavy wooden chair, sweating profusely under the single bright bulb overhead.
Matteo stood before him, tossing a heavy glass vial of clear liquid back and forth between his hands.
"Felix promised you two hundred thousand dollars," Matteo said, his voice echoing off the brick arches. "He told you that after I died of an apparent 'heart failure' brought on by my paralysis, he would take over the estate and make you head of logistics."
Carl wept, trembling uncontrollably. "Don Matteo! Please! He threatened my family! He said if I didn't store the chemicals in the shed, he’d kill my brother!"
"Felix doesn't kill brothers," Matteo said coldly, leaning down until his face was inches from the gardener's. "He gets other people to do it for him. Where is the drop site?"
Carl gasped for air. "Port Chicago! Pier 42! Tonight at midnight! A shipment of weapons is coming in from Milwaukee—Valenti’s men are delivering heavy ordnance to Felix’s loyalists so they can breach the estate!"
Sal looked at Matteo. "Boss, that’s a trap. They know Carl might break. They want us to go to Pier 42."
"Of course it’s a trap," Matteo said, straightening up and wiping his hands with a clean white handkerchief. "Valenti thinks I’m still reacting to threats. He thinks I’m defensive."
He turned toward Sal. "Call the Strike Team. We aren't going to Pier 42 to investigate. We’re going there to execute every Valenti operative on Illinois soil."
At 11:30 p.m., thick fog rolled off Lake Michigan, wrapping Pier 42 in a ghost-white shroud.
Three heavy industrial cranes loomed over the black water like giant metal skeletons. Parked inside an abandoned cargo warehouse were five black SUVs, their engines idling quietly. Inside sat sixteen heavily armed mercenaries hired by Don Valenti, led by Felix’s top enforcer, a scarred killer named Rocco.
Rocco checked his watch. "The old man should be sending his scouts by now. The moment Soriano’s lead car enters the gate, blow the charges."
Suddenly, the warehouse lights flickered and died, plunging the space into pitch-black darkness.
"What the hell?" Rocco swore, reaching for his night-vision goggles.
Before he could pull them over his eyes, the massive corrugated iron doors of the warehouse were blown inward with a deafening CRACK of C4 explosives.
Shockwaves rattled through the concrete floor. Smoke and blue tactical light flooded the room as Matteo’s elite assault team poured through the breaches like shadows.
Gunfire erupted—violent, rhythmic, and devastatingly precise.
Matteo walked through the shattered entrance behind his men, wearing a long black tactical coat, a heavy suppressed weapon in his hands. He did not take cover. He moved with cold, terrifying precision, firing three shots into a mercenary attempting to flank from behind a shipping crate, then pivoting to drop another two through the windshield of an idling SUV.
The battle lasted less than four minutes.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the dripping of water from the metal roof and the faint groans of dying men.
Matteo stepped over the debris, stopping beside Rocco, who was slumped against a steel pillar, bleeding heavily from his shoulder.
Matteo pointed his weapon down at Rocco’s face. "Where is my brother?"
Rocco spat blood onto Matteo’s leather boot, grinning maliciously through red-stained teeth. "You think... you’re so smart, Soriano... You brought your whole crew to the docks..."
Rocco’s grin widened. "Felix isn't in Milwaukee... He’s at your house."
Matteo’s blood ran cold.
Rocco laughed weakly. "The dock shipment was the bait... to draw you and Sal away from the estate. Valenti’s main strike team... thirty men... hit your gates five minutes ago. Your maid... and her little brat... are already dead."
Matteo didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger once, ending Rocco’s sentence forever.

He spun around, his voice roaring through his comms unit with a fury that shook even Sal.
"ALL UNITS! BACK TO THE ESTATE NOW!"
