Chapter 6 - Epilogue — The New Horizon

Three months later, the spring thaw finally broke over the banks of the Mississippi River, washing away the remnants of a harsh Minnesota winter.

The old Crestview Clinic had been dissolved by federal receivership, its assets redirected into a public trust fund dedicated to urban safety compliance and family support services—overseen jointly by a newly appointed community board and a trust managed by Nellie Fields.

Katie Carpenter awaited trial in a federal detention facility, her high-priced defense attorneys unable to pierce the mountain of financial and forensic evidence submitted by federal prosecutors. Olivia Gilbert had filed for a rapid, silent divorce, distancing herself entirely from the collapsing Carpenter dynasty.

And under an open sky in a quiet cemetery overlooking Lake Minnetonka, a small, polished granite headstone stood beneath the shade of an oak tree.

Sawyer Fields. Beloved Son. Always Remembered.

Alistair and Nellie stood side by side before the grave. Alistair held a bouquet of fresh spring tulips, placing them gently against the stone.

“The city council approved the new children’s park downtown,” Nellie said softly, her voice carrying a quiet, hard-won peace. She leaned comfortably on her new prosthetic support, her posture upright and strong. “They named the community science center after him. Children are already drawing rockets on the sidewalks.”

Alistair turned to look at her, feeling a profound sense of humility and gratitude that he didn't deserve, yet was blessed to receive.

“You’re rebuilding everything, Nellie,” he said softly.

“We are rebuilding, Alistair,” she corrected him gently, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. “You can’t change the past, and the scars don't ever truly disappear. But you can choose what kind of foundation you build on top of the ruins.”

Alistair nodded, looking out across the sparkling blue water where the spring sunlight danced over the horizon.

They had both lost so much to the cold machinery of wealth and ambition. But as they walked away together down the garden path, hand in hand, they knew that the truth had finally set them free.
