Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Three days later, the state Medical Licensing Board convened for an emergency disciplinary hearing regarding Claire Bennett’s conduct.
The courtroom-style chamber was packed with prestigious physicians, hospital executives, and news journalists summoned secretly by Dr. Vance. Vance sat at the head prosecutor's table, wearing a triumphant smile. He intended to publicly ruin Claire once and for all, making her an example to anyone who dared cross him.
Claire sat at the defense table alone, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Her heart pounded in her chest. She had no high-priced lawyers, no corporate backing.
"This hearing is called to order," the Board Chairman announced. "We are reviewing allegations of gross professional misconduct against Nurse Claire Bennett."
Vance stood up smoothly. "Members of the board, Miss Bennett has demonstrated a consistent pattern of arrogant insubordination. Three years ago, she was terminated from Chicago General for medical malpractice. Last week, she illegally performed a surgical procedure on the daughter of Mr. Grant Holloway without physician supervision. She is a danger to patients."
A murmur of disapproval rippled through the audience. Claire swallowed hard, feeling the weight of the room crushing down on her.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a loud bang.
Every head turned.
Grant Holloway walked into the courtroom, dressed in a sharp bespoke charcoal suit, radiating absolute power. Walking beside him were three of the most feared corporate litigation attorneys in the country. And walking directly behind Grant, holding his hand tightly, was tiny Lily Holloway.
"Mr. Holloway?" the Chairman sputtered, startled. "This is a closed board hearing—"
"I own forty percent of the medical real estate this board operates out of," Grant said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings as he marched down the aisle. "So this hearing is open."
Grant reached the front, placing a thick, black leather binder onto the central podium.
"Dr. Vance has spoken at length about patterns of misconduct," Grant stated, turning his intense gaze toward Vance, who suddenly looked visibly nervous. "So let us speak about his."
Grant nodded to his lead attorney, who immediately distributed legal packets to every board member.
"Inside those binders," Grant announced, "are encrypted emails, offshore bank statements, and sworn affidavits from three clinical research directors at Chicago General. They prove conclusively that Dr. Arthur Vance altered pediatric trial results, concealed toxic drug reactions, and actively framed Dr. Claire Bennett when she refused to accept his bribes."
Vance jumped up, his face turning bright red. "This is slander! These documents are forged!"
"They were retrieved directly from your private servers by federal investigators two hours ago, Dr. Vance," Grant said coldly. "The FBI is currently waiting outside this courtroom to arrest you for clinical fraud and obstruction of justice."
The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Reporters scrambled to take photos as federal agents walked through the rear doors, handcuffs ready. Vance sagged back into his chair, his face drained of all color, his empire crumbling in seconds.
Grant walked over to Claire’s table. He held out his hand to her.
"Your medical license was reinstated by the Supreme Court thirty minutes ago, Dr. Bennett," Grant said, a soft, rare smile breaking through his stern features. "You are officially restored as a pediatric specialist."
Tears streamed down Claire's cheeks. For three agonizing years, she had carried the crushing shame of a lie. Now, she was finally free.

Lily ran forward and wrapped her small arms around Claire's waist. "I told Daddy you were the best doctor in the world!"
Claire collapsed to her knees, hugging Lily tight, crying tears of overwhelming gratitude as Grant watched them both with deep, undeniable tenderness.
