Chapter 4 - Siege at Ravenport Memorial

The lights in the hallway suddenly flickered and died, plunging the pediatric ICU into eerie emergency red lighting.

The low hum of backup generators kicked in, accompanied by the muffled, distant pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire echoing up through the elevator shafts from the lower levels.

Harper gasped, rushing toward Noah’s room. “Noah!”

Dante moved with terrifying speed. He caught her by the waist and shoved her behind his massive frame, drawing a customized matte-black hand-cannon from beneath his coat in a single fluid motion.

“Matteo, seal the floor,” Dante barked orders with absolute, cold precision. “Tell Marcus and the nurses to get into the safe room behind the pharmacy. You two,” he pointed to two of his elite guards, “stay on this door. If anyone without a Valente pin walks down this hallway... kill them.”

“Dante!” Harper panicked, gripping his arm tightly. “What are they going to do?”

Dante looked down at her, his expression utterly devoid of fear, replaced by the lethal focus of a predator preparing for war.

“Marco Moretti has been trying to take my territory for six years,” Dante said calmly, checking the chamber of his weapon. “He thinks because my son is sick and I am away from my stronghold, I am vulnerable. He is about to learn how wrong he is.”

He grabbed Harper by the hand and pulled her inside Noah’s room.

Noah was still sleeping heavily under the influence of the sedatives and antibiotics, his small chest rising rhythmically. Dante walked over to the bed, reached down, and gently touched the boy’s forehead with two fingers.

“Watch over him,” Dante told Harper. “Do not leave this room, no matter what you hear outside.”

“Dante, wait!” Harper cried out, reaching for him as he turned toward the door.

He paused, looking back at her. The emergency red lights cast long, dramatic shadows across his face.

“Five years ago, you left because you thought I couldn’t keep you safe,” Dante said quietly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “Watch me now, Harper.”

He stepped out of the room and slammed the reinforced steel door shut behind him. The electronic lock engaged with a heavy clunk.

Outside in the corridor, the violence arrived with explosive force.

The stairwell doors blew open, and six armed men in tactical gear poured into the hallway, firing automatic weapons. Dante’s two guards returned fire instantly, dropping the first two men before being driven back behind the nurse’s station by a hail of bullets.

Dante didn’t hide behind the desk.

He walked out into the center of the hallway, a demon under the red emergency lights.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

His weapon roared with deafening power. Each shot was calculated, precise, and lethal. Three of Moretti’s men dropped to the floor before they could even adjust their aim.

Dante advanced through the gunfire, completely unbothered by the bullets striking the plaster walls around him. He ducked behind a structural pillar, reloaded his weapon in under two seconds, and swung around to catch the final hitman in the chest, dropping him instantly.

Silence returned to the hallway, broken only by the smell of cordite, blood, and spent brass casings littering the floor.

Matteo rushed up the stairs, covered in drywall dust, holding a heavy tactical rifle. “Dante! Moretti’s main strike team is coming up the north elevators! There are at least twelve of them!”

Dante wiped a fleck of blood from his cheek, his dark eyes burning with demonic fury.

“Good,” Dante gritted out, pulling two fresh magazines from his pocket. “I’ve been waiting five years to bleed Marco dry. Tell the boys to close the exits. Nobody leaves this floor alive.”
