Chapter 6 - The Broken Veil

By 5:30 AM, the storm had finally passed, giving way to the faint, pale pink light of dawn over the Ravenport skyline.

A massive cleanup crew—consisting of private cleaning companies loyal to the Valente family—had arrived at the hospital. Within an hour, the damaged walls were screened off, the brass shell casings collected, and the hallway restored to pristine order. The local authorities, heavily funded by Dante’s charitable trusts, filed a public report attributing the noise to a catastrophic oxygen tank explosion in a storage closet.

The hospital was quiet once more.

Inside Room 402, the bright morning sun streamed through the window.

Noah was sitting up in bed, eating a small bowl of strawberry gelatin. The IV lines were still attached, but the high fever was entirely gone, and his color had returned.

The heavy steel door swung open slowly.

Dante stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh white dress shirt, though his left sleeve was slightly tight over the bandage covering his bullet graze. His hair was neat, his face washed clean of any trace of gunpowder or blood.

Harper stood up instantly from her chair, her body tensing as she looked at him.

Dante ignored her for a moment. His eyes fixed entirely on the small boy sitting in the bed.

Noah stopped his spoon halfway to his mouth, staring at the tall, powerful man standing in the doorway.

“Are you the king?” Noah asked out loud, his voice innocent and clear.

Dante froze. He looked at Harper in total confusion, then back at his son.

“What?” Dante asked softly.

“Mama told me my dad was a king who protected a big kingdom far away,” Noah explained, pointing his plastic spoon at Dante’s polished leather shoes. “And she said you were fighting the monsters outside so I could get better.”

Dante felt a sudden, sharp tightening in his chest—a feeling far more painful than the bullet graze on his shoulder. He looked at Harper, seeing the soft, apologetic look in her eyes. She hadn’t taught their son to hate him. She had protected his memory.

Slowly, deliberately, the ruthless mob boss who had just executed seven men walked over to the hospital bed and knelt down on the hard floor, bringing himself down to the child’s eye level.

“I am your dad, Noah,” Dante said, his voice raspy with suppressed emotion. “And... yes. I protect the kingdom. But my most important job in the whole world... is protecting you.”

Noah looked at him for a long moment, studying Dante’s dark eyes, his nose, his jawline—the very features he saw in his own reflection every morning.

Slowly, Noah reached out his small, sticky hand and touched Dante’s cheek.

“You look just like me,” Noah whispered in awe.

A single tear escaped Dante’s eye, slipping down his cheek beneath the child’s small fingers. He covered Noah’s tiny hand with his own massive palm, leaning into the touch.

“No, tiny man,” Dante whispered, his voice cracking. “You look just like me.”

Harper stood by the window, covering her mouth with her hands as tears spilled over her eyelashes. Five years of fear, running, and isolation seemed to dissolve in the morning light of that hospital room.
